1896 Rifle-1903 Cartouche

Post by rpdalton »

I have a line on an 1896 rifle with an 1896 stock that has a 1903 cartouche. The rifle is in the 39500 range which places its manufacture in 1897. Any thoughts on this? Possibly restocked in 1903?

Maybe somebody took an 1898 stock and carved the bolt handle notch area, so that a model 1896 action could fit into it.

Photos of this area of your stock would help with assessment of your 'riddle'.

Krags with replacement stocks did not require an acceptance cartouche. They were already 'accepted' government property.

Another possible answer is that the cartouche is bogus.

A correct model 1896 stock will have a 'scalloped' bolt handle area, like the first attached photo.
Some attempts to fit a later model 1898 stock to a model 1896 Krag action may have a rather crude 'squarish' appearance, like the second photo.
