Re: Vithavuori for the 30-40
Lyman has data shot in a pressure test barrel (24 inch), fired over Rem 9.5 primers. There are 3 jacketed bullet weights, 150 with N140, and 180 and 220 with N150. For the max loads, all are to pressures to just under 40,000 CUP (which I wouldn't shoot in an original Krag nor in my modern rolling bl...

Re: Load Suggestions
That wasn't me! I have a modern rolling block in .30-40 and use .308 jacketed bullets.butlersrangers wrote: ↑Fri Oct 09, 2020 3:19 pmMy point was that 'KWK' needed to make sure that .311" diameter bullets were compatible with his rifle's chamber & cartridge cases, as well as, with his bore dimensions.

Re: ERROR IN LYMAN 50th RELOADING MANUAL FOR KRAG
Hodgdon website lists a max of 35.5gr for a 180gr bullet. That "Hodgdon" data is old DuPont data they inherited when they took over IMR. I don't understand why DuPont had trouble with 4895 in their tests, but it placed low for both bullet weights they published. Note that for the 180 gr b...

Re: Load Suggestions
I have only one load for my .30-40: 35 gr of IMR 4895 with the Rem 9.5 primer and Hornady 220 gr RN giving 2000 fps from 30". Based on Lyman's pressure tested data, this should be in the mid 30's in pressure. Lyman's data suggests 4350 requires about 15% more powder but won't lower pressure muc...

Re: Pressure - Reloading Manuals
CIP lists their piezo "Pmax" (maximum working pressure?) for 30-40 Krag as 3250 bar, which is 47137 psi. CIP piezo numbers are usually a bit higher than SAAMI's. Part has to do with how they define, statistically, the limit pressure. Part has to do with their using a different configurati...

Re: Pressure - Reloading Manuals
Lyman has the only modern pressure tested data I can find, for 3 jacketed bullet weights, 150, 180, and 220. That 220 bullet is out of production, but I don't know about the other 2 weights they tested (I haven't tried those weights). I have the 48th edition (2002), but the last time I looked at a L...

Re: Safe Hunting Load?
Lyman's data indicates 4895 will give you the lowest pressures. Their data was shot in the standard 24" barrel, and you'll loose 100-150 fps in your barrel. For 180 at 2265 from 18", every powder they tested looks as if it will stay below SAAMI's recommended pressure. I'd use 4895 or maybe...

Re: Safe Hunting Load?

Since I have a short barrel, 18", I am considering 4895 for it's faster burn rate. Should I reduce the powder? I think this will yield a muzzle velocity of about 2,000, and 33,000 in chamber pressure, well below the SAMI 40,000.

I have a 30" barrel rolling blo...
