Re: X-Tall front blade
<r>I received this rifle from a friend whose Aunt had died. The military stock was cut off right in front of the first barrel band. I replaced it with a Boyds stock. Barrel is full length and slugs at .309" At 50 yds I get five shot groups of around 2" with the open sights. I have not shot...

X-Tall front blade
<r>I have a model '98 Krag, Serial #314301 that had a Marbles 894 front blade. Even with the ladder sight laying flat I would hit around a foot high at 50 yds. I bought an extra tall sight from S&S Firearms. Now, using Remington 180 grain factory loads and 180 Pro-Hunter handloads, I can hit dea...

Re: Western 29 brass
<r>I bought a 20 round box of loaded 30-40 ammo at a gun show a few years ago. The brass was marked Western 29. They were in a brown cardboard military box that was in bad shape. It was loaded with 220 grain round nose FMJ bullets. I pulled the bullets and fired the primers off. Very weak primers, m...

Re: Does anyone have a favorite ball/spherical powder?
I have been using 39 grains of H414 with a 170 grain Oregon Trail cast bullet at a velocity of 2116 fps, average of 5 shots. Accuracy is around 3" at 100 yds. I am going to drop the velocity to try and improve accuracy. The barrel in my 1901 manufactured Mod. 1898 Krag slugs at .309" H414 ...

Re: Boyd's stock on an 1898
I just took a look at Boyd's web site and it looks like they have stocks for Krag Models 1896 and 1898 in both carbine and rifle but in semi-inlet standard walnut only. In their custom options they show Claro X and Claro XX but not for Krags. It says custom options not available for all models. I di...
