Re: Process for Sighting in an 1898 Krag
One trick you can use is to sight it in at 25 yds. and then take it out to 100 yds. It should be in the black. Each increment on the rear sight will change the elevation about 2" at 100 yds. I replaced the front sight blade with a slightly higher one, that got rid of the bevel someone filed on ...

Re: Buried 30-40 ammo
Any time I get old ammo like that I'll pull the bullets, knock out the primers, check the cases for split necks and anneal the necks on the good ones. I have quite a few that have been processed that way, some dating back to 1899. I haven't shot any of them with full loads just mild cast.

Re: Problem with 1902 sight
I had that problem, no rust or hardened grease, just a very tight fit. Finally just forced it off and stoned the inside of the slot to a point that it would slide. I don't recall the exact sequence I used. At some point the pin holding the wheel was drifted out and probably a brass punch to get the ...

Re: Help IDing mixed box of Krag ammo
My Krag came with about 3 boxes of mixed ammo. All were taken apart, the ones that were not already split got annealed. Haven't had any problem using cast loads, even the 1899 and 1900 head stamped ones.
I agree on the wide range of case weights.

Re: Reloading,where to start?
I don't think Lee makes a 30-40 Krag collet neck sizer. I cobbled an '06' sizer, it sizes most of the neck. The next best choice, "maybe", would be a 303 Brit collect using a 30 cal. mandrel.

Re: New Member & New Krag Owner - original 1898 rifle
The different color of woods on the stock may indicate a replacement fore stock. If so a splice will probably show up under the band. The Krag I got had been cut and whittled, but the original fore stock was with it. I ended up adding a 3" piece between the originals.

Re: Cast Load for My Sporter
My Krag has a .301/.310 bore. My first load was the 311467 Loverin cast in lino and sized .309 at the check tapering up to .313. 18 grs of 4759 and Rem LP primers, got a 1.55 C to C group. The Lee 180 grain weighs in at about 168 grs (hard alloy) and .3115 dia., it does just as well. <br />I've gone...
