Re: 30-40 Gallery Hand Loads?
Waterman here with some recollections and caveats from geezerdom: 1: Mattern was written in the 1930s.. . . Yes, but Harris wrote his thoughts in 1993, as stated. To add my experience, lots of novices to the "cat sneeze" region of handloading are terrified by the "double-charg...

Here are C.E. Harris' remarks. The first two levels are probably what you want, but the whole thing is worth study. - Cast Bullet Basics For Military Surplus Rifles By C.E. Harris Rev. 9-6-93 Cast bullet loads usually give a more useful zero at practical field ranges with military battle sights than...

I have suggested light French polish to emulate handling sheen when matching condition, NOT for finishing an entire military rifle. Raw linseed is the authentic overall finish for US rifles of the period.

Re: Me and my 1917
1917 ejectors are prone to breakage. Lots of folks confuse ejector with extractor.

Re: Me and my 1917
This page from Hatcher's Notebook may be helpful to understand the US 1917's barrel dimensions, which are not the same as British .303's and are actually a bit "tighter" than those of the Krag and M1903.

Re: DNA 'kicked in'
Some sources spell this "Ukko Pekka" and apply as nickname to the M39.
Wikipedia:
M/39: nicknamed "Ukko-Pekka" after the former President Pehr Evind Svinhufvud, a compromise between the Army and White Guard, adopted so as to standardize Mosin–Nagant production. . .
