Re: 1899 carbine ?

You MAY have a so-called Philippine Constabulary Carbine. They were 1899 carbines that were fitted with "short" rifle-type stocks and had the muzzle turned to use the Krag bayonet. They were designed for the slighter-statured Filipino members of the P.C. in the 1900s. The rifle has a 1898,...

Re: New to me Krag--Info would be appreciated

Beautiful rifle! Yes, I remember looking at it. Be careful with a 1903 or Trapdoor, especially if they are collectors items.

The Krag is fun to shoot - pretty mild recoil, compared with an '03 - wish the ammo wasn't so expensive. I took my 1898 to a hunter sight-in and had lots of "o...

Re: New to me Krag--Info would be appreciated

Hi, Kerry,

Welcome to the addictive world of Krags! I started out with one last year and now have four - had a fifth for a short time!

Your rifle is probably a Model 1898 and was probably built as a rifle, not a carbine. Look carefully and make sure the "8" in "1...

Re: AM I GOING ABOUT THIS THE RIGHT WAY ?

It depends - Are you trying to "restore" it or just make a shooter? Another consideration is how much you paid for the rifle and how much for the parts.

I've seen Krag Bannerman/Kirk "shooters in the $250-300 range.

Re: Is this an 1892? Any info would be great.

I've seen pictures of the rifle and it has an 1898 stock, although I'm not sure how they did that - I thought 1898 stocks were "special" and weren't interchangable with earlier Krags.

The rifle is more properly an 1892 modified to 1896 (or later) standards. The original 1892 had a c...

Bannerman carbine finish?

I have a Bannerman carbine which was probably made from an 1896 carbine. It has the modified 1903 Springfield stock and the 1903-type front sight blade. My question is the rifle seems to have an "old" varnish finish. Did Bannerman apply this or was it done at a later time?

I'm think...

Re: modify or stash?

You have a sporterized Krag 1896 rifle. I don't see any problem with further sporterizing. I would say it has little or no collector value.

Re: 1896 Carbine?

I don't believe a 40,000 range Krag is a carbine but a cut-down rifle. I would guess an "old" sporterizing job. Very common in the days when Krags sold for a few dollars and were remade to look more like commercial hunting rifles.

Re: Need Info

I used a teflon pad and a copper (not steel) brush and some CLP and kerosene (for the small parts). It took some elbow grease but the result was a fine rifle.

Re: Need Info

If you mean in original condition, anywhere from $500 to $5000. An 1898, the most common rifle, will be in the $500-1000 range. It never hurts to look the 1898 in the picture (the bottom one) set me back only $285. It had some surface rust and needed a part or two replaced but after a little TLC, it...
