Re: World's largest Buffington sight

My No. 5 L-E carbine was made at Fazackerly, in 1947. The rear-sight is machined, (not stamped). The bayonet came out of a work-bench drawer, that was pretty full of them, at the 'Pattern Room' - Enfield Arsenal in 1972. Herbert Woodend, the Curator of the Pattern Room Collection, gave it to me. The...

Re: World's largest Buffington sight

Some Colt 'potato diggers' variations appear to wear Buffington style sights.

Re: World's largest Buffington sight

I knew I had seen a sight similar to that "Buffington' inspired rear-sight on that Winchester Automatic Rifle.
It finally came to me!

BTW 'Zac' - I too, have a soft spot for a good shooting carbine.

Re: World's largest Buffington sight

The base of fortification artillery carriages pivot like the base of a Buffington-style (rifle) rear-sights.

Buffington did not invent the pivoting gun carriage. He did seem to draw inspiration from the idea.

Re: World's largest Buffington sight

General Buffington says: When the rifle barrels get big, put the barrel on the "site bed" and not the "sight bed" on the barrel! (I just made this up).

Re: World's largest Buffington sight

'Zac' - The WAR (Winchester Automatic Rifle) sight, that you posted, definitely has some Buffington design features. It has some similarity to the rear-sight that Winchester used on their early Model 52 - .22 cal. target rifle. The elevation-slide 'catch & adjustment-wheel' appears inspired by t...

Lebel rifle and its 8mm cal. smokeless cartridge 1888

In 1888, the U.S. War Department Display, at the Cincinnati Exposition, contained details on the French Lebel rifle and its small caliber 'smokeless' cartridge.

The catalog description showed no 'flavor' or hint of how radical and advanced the cartridge and rifle were!
