Mystery solved on gunsmith...well sort of
I finally had a chance to remove the stock, and found the name W.L. Armitage stamped on the bottom of the barrel near the receiver. The gun was bedded, and the gunsmith added an extra action screw, in a fashion similar to Norwegian Krags. I Googled W.L. Armitage but came up with absolutely nothing. ...

Re: Custom 1898 Krag Target Rifle
<blockquote>You said it was accurate, well it should be with all that work. Even if you did not shoot it, that one would be worth having to look at and handle every day!<br />That forward hold down screw probably contributes a lot to the accuracy since it has no barrel bands. How is it attached to t...

155 grain Sierra Match King Palma
Does anyone have any experience, good or bad, shooting the 155 grain Sierra Match King Palma bullet out of a Krag. Sierra reloading manual calls for IMR4064 for an accuracy load, but I'm really more interested is how the bullet handles not being up against the lands and grooves in an OAL short enoug...

Re: Custom 1898 Krag Target Rifle
I've disassembled it to see how it is put together. The screw goes into the bottom of the receiver just like it does on a Norwegian Krag. The barrel shoulders both on the inside of the action near the recoil shoulder and on the front of the receiver. the action is pad bedded under the receiver where...

Re: Custom 1898 Krag Target Rifle
The quality of the build is first rate. Even the butt plate is hand forged and checkered. VERY accurate due to the Douglas XX barrel and glass bedded action. <br /><a href='http://s568.photobucket.com/user/cprher/media/1898%20Krag%20Rifle/1898%20Krag%20Target%20Rifle/IMG_20161106_190544096_zpsre6xai...

Custom 1898 Krag Target Rifle
I bought this online several years ago and almost immediately sold it to a close friend. Well, I just got it back today and I'm very happy I did. Don't know the name of the gunsmith or when it was built.<br /><a href='http://s568.photobucket.com/user/cprher/media/1898%20Krag%20Rifle/1898%20Krag%20Ta...

Re: My next door neighbor has an interesting Krag
No, he's a different guy. We got to know each other just recently. The receiver ring is dated 1896. This one is not sporterized, but the stock at least has been refinished in the past. The metal looks too new to be original finish.<br />Keith<br /><br /><blockquote>(Keith - Is this the same 'neighbo...

My next door neighbor has an interesting Krag
Owned by his Dad and past to him years ago, it had been refinished (wood and metal). Nice blue job (the metal was not over polished) and stock work but as with many home gunsmiths, too much wood was removed from the stock. It is stamped Steyr on the receiver ring along with the serial number 28X. It...

Re: Final Report - Developing match load for my rifle
Fine looking rifle. Did you reblue any of the parts?
Nope. I just gave it a good cleaning. Didn't refinish the stock either. I just used hot Linseed oil and gave it a soak and a brisk scrub with an old T-shirt.
