Re: An ebay curiosity

I wish ebay searches for original old Frankford Arsenal stuff didn't include millions of pages of new Frankford Arsenal reloading products!

Re: Cupronickle jackets

I shot up a bunch of old cupro-nickel jacketed bullets in a Springfield one time long ago. I experienced severe jacket fouling. Following the old timer's protocol for removing it, I filled the bore with stronger ammonia (the Real McCoy) and let it sit for a while. When I un-stoppered the barrel and ...

Re: Flea Market Find

Don't ignore those low number '03's. A 1907 vintage one will have been made with the same steel, by the same guys, following the same heat treat protocols as when the last of our Krags were made just a couple of years earlier. Just don't hot rod the ammo you feed it. Later "low number" '03...

Re: A couple loads I'm trying

I've been using that bullet in my National Match '03 and absolutely love it. And yes, it seems to like high velocity (2000fps +) and to be hard. I re-barreled another 1903A1 with a Criterion barrel and throated it to match the ogive on this bullet, and I now dwell in Nirvana.

Next up is a...

Re: Contemplating buying a bullet mould

I'll second that re: NOE moulds. An old Lyman/Ideal Loverin design can be depended on to work well also- if you can find one that is not out of round (and if you do find one, cherish it). Then again there is the old stand-by 311284, but only if it fits your throat and the bore riding section actuall...

Re: A question for anyone out there that casts

First things first: do a chamber cast so you know what your throat dimensions are. Cast bullet fit to the throat is waaaaay more important than groove diameter, no matter what rifle you're shooting.

Re: Interesting Find.

When I remember how many of those sealed boxes of vintage Krag and '03 ammo I ripped open back in the 60's and 70's in order to shoot tin cans in the shale pit, I want to cry!

Re: Fred C. Ness & Krag sporters

Same Pacific, as far as I know. Please correct me if wrong.

No markings on the barrel other than Hervey's name stamped on the underside. Maker unknown, heavy straight taper. No, I haven't slugged the bore. A chamber cast revealed a .225 throat with a standard leade, and .224 groove diamet...

Re: Fred C. Ness & Krag sporters

I have a Krag that was converted to single shot and barreled to .22 Maximum Lovell, by old Hervey Lovell himself. With its heavy barrel and Pacific double-set triggers it is a bug hole shooter. While I don't hot rod it (because of expensive brass) I do run warm loads in it.

<a href='http:...
