A more functional measurement would be from the bolt face to the rear of the front locking lug. That's the dimension that holds the cartridge in the chamber, so to speak. This assumes that your original bolt wasn't really cracked.
Looking forward to hearing what your friend finds out!

Re: Stolen Krag
Jeremy, I've seen your posting on FB regarding that Krag. I'm down in Jamestown, PA. I'll ask in a couple local gunstores and see if anyone has tried to fence a Krag in the last few months.
I sincerely hope you find it.

So, have you tried shooting your Krag yet? Some shoot just fine with commercial ammo, others respond well to careful handloading. I have one of each!

Re: Norwegian Sporter Krag
Hmmm. I love a good mystery. If your discontinuity travels for some distance longitudinally down the bolt toward the rear, I'd be more inclined to think it's just the mark left by a radiused milling cutter that lifted off just forward of your ejector groove.<br />On my US Krag bolt there is more tha...

Re: Norwegian Sporter Krag
I was looking at one of my US Krag bolts and noticed that one of the machining operations used to form the locking lug where it joins the cylindrical bolt body contour left a faint arc-shaped impression or discontinuity in the surface. I'll try to take a good picture. I hope that's what you have on ...

Re: new to the sight
Paul, I was sure Joshmaget's rifle had a carbine stock because I thought I could see a barrel band spring in his picture. I feel bad for jumping to an inaccurate conclusion. Just sayin' that you don't have the market cornered on going up learning curves!<br /><br />Joshmaget, my two sporters are Fra...

Re: new to the sight
I first learned the "spread the barrel band" technique on my Snider-Enfield and Martini-Henry. If I recall, an M91 Mosin Nagant I used to have had a stock pin for the rear barrel band, too.<br /><br />Joshmaget, if you were careful and have a drill press, you can make and install your own ...

Re: new to the sight
Here's a pic of a carbine with the band spring retaining the barrel band. If your rifle has a stock pin, it'll look a little like the rounded head of a finishing nail, just in front of the barrel band.<br /><br /><a href='http://s127.photobucket.com/user/gunboat57/media/Krag/9c19e9e96ec358beef6bee64...

Re: new to the sight
Here's a pic showing the various Krag rifle rear sights. The 1898 and 1902 are similar but I'd trust Dick's judgement, even if your picture is blurry.<br /><a href='http://s127.photobucket.com/user/gunboat57/media/Krag/KragRearSiteModels_zps5f4a9cf0.jpg.html'><IMG src="http://i127.photobucket.com/al...
