Elli , From the lack of markings I'd think it is probably Norwegian in 6.5 .US krags are marked US Springfield Armory with model #. Danes are also marked with the armory name and are 8 mm . Here's a site that may help.

Are you sure it says Model ? Sounds like a Norwegian model 1894 which were stamped with the date of manufacture , serial # and crowned K ( for Kongsberg Arms Factory ).Your serial # would have been manufactured in 1898 , cartridge 6.5 x 55 .

I, for one , would hate to see it chopped any further .There does seem to be alot of guys out there interested in restoration, so might I suggest selling it as is and using the money to buy one already sporterized . Could make everybody happy .

U.S. Krags will have the info on the left side of the receiver ,over the side plate .Should read SPRINFGIELD ARMORY ,then either 1894 ,1895 or Model (1896,1898 or 1899 ),then serial # .The 6.5's wolud be Norwegian and the info would be on top of the receiver with the serial# on the side ,just ahead ...
