Re: Krag Cast bullets in the 21st century
I've finally got around to digging through some of the stuff I moved 6mo ago. A cast bullet outing is certainly in order for me. I found a lot of cast loads for the Krag, for the Garand, for the K31 and for my other rifle that's over 100yrs old, my Remington 14 in 30 Remington. I'd previously though...

Re: accuracy loads
I've had some good luck with light bullets myself, the Hornady 123gr .310 diameter V-max. When I first started shooting them, the ogive of the bullet touched the rifling at max magazine length, they don't anymore. I was using a fast burning high ntiroglycerine powder for around 2500fps, I'd estimate.

Re: Krag Cast bullets in the 21st century
I got in on the first NOE/castboolits group buy for that mold, just a two cavity, one cavity with a hollow point pin. I have some of them loaded, enough for a 50rd match, I think. There's one of those coming up, but no sense in getting a zero with the Krag, no Roosevelt match this year. I'd shoot th...

126yr old scout rifle
I decided to take that Miller Kodiak Dreamount, that thing that looked like the Brooklyn bridge, off of my 92/96 sporter. I got tired of the ejection problem and figured I'd use a short Kraghaus mount to put a decent NC Star 2.75x LER scope I'd taken off my Garand on it. Looks good, eye relief isn't...

Re: 30-40 brass substitution
Maybe the 6.5x53R Dutch and Romanian, which can be made from .303. Brits called the little rimmed case the .256 Mannlicher. The British 240 Magnum Flanged could be worked down and fireformed.

Re: 30-40 brass substitution
The rim would keep you from swaging the base small enough. I used to make 6.5 Japanese by swaging down GI 7.62x51. Even with the base being fairly far forward because of the extractor groove design of the 7.62, .4575" was as small as I could swage the base without also reducing the rim. You mig...

Re: Rough chamber
Could it be a wad of steel wool left from someone's chamber cleaning?

Re: Practical Krag barrel vise?
My last vise was simply an old pipe vise secured to the top of a 4x4 post that was part of the stairs. Aluminum shims kept the old vise from marring the barrel. I got a garage to play in now, I'll have to get that set up again.

Re: Deviation and Drift
I wish I could speak and read Norwegian. I wonder if the Norwegians experienced the same phenomena of the extreme left deviation in their model 1894 Krag rifles? There is a lot of similarity between the U.S. and Norwegian long rifles. Some significant differences between rifles: 6.5 X 55 mm rimless...
