You might try googling the serial number and variations of Krag 1898 ser number and Springfield 1898 and serial number. It might hit upon an auction sight or something.

Perhaps the magazine cutoff assembly is engaged. Unless your weapon has been modified, the cutoff switch is located on the left side of the receiver behind the top of the side plate. This allowed the magazine to be "cutoff" thereby avoiding waste of ammunition. Flip the switch.
