I guess I could practice with the nail idea and see how it goes . Getting the hand guard were it would not move and positioned just right might be the challenge .

That is what someone else suggested to and seems easiest also . Maybe sometime I will pick up an original . I love they way this shoots with the peep sight but I also like having a piece of history that has not been messed with . Thanks for all your help I really appreciate it .

Did some looking and the 1903 hand guard does seem more shaped like Krag so I may give it a try .

Thanks for your help . I have bought a top hand guard for a M-1917 rifle hoping it would be close but it is same width it's entire lenghth while my Krag hand guard starts out one width but widens up as it goes back . Do you know by chance if a 1903 one is like the M-1917 or the Krag style ?

Tried to post picture of rear peep sight but I am not very tech savy . It is a Redford type mounted on rear by the bolt handle , has two knobs on side and top for adjustments .

One idea someone gave was since my rifle is a bit mismatched anyway was to cut off the bad part on the hand guard and slide it back . Just not sure about doing that thou .
