Re: Would You Accept the Krag In 1892?
The Lee probably should have been adopted in the 1880s and upgraded in the 90s. I have read that Lee got crossways with Army Ordnance over contracts dating back to the Civil War. Army Ordnance may have had it in for Lee and a rifle of his design would not be picked. Politics. During the 1892 trials,...

Re: My thoughts on DCM - Krag paperwork
Question - did Benicia ever create cut downs with 24" barrels? The reason I ask is that I have a Krag that my grandfather bought somtime in the 1930s from DCM. My father believes grandpa cut the barrel himself. He may have, but the crown was expertly redone and the front sight brazed back in pl...

Re: Why did the US go with the Krag design?
We are in agreement on that! Cost of production and time required to produce each rifle were certainly a factor in the decision to switch to a Mauser based receiver. A lot of lessons from the SAW with regard to rifle production came into play in addition to the performance differences. The 30-40 was...

Re: How it works - Smithsonian (patent model extractor)
Mauser may have claimed specific design features of their dual lug mechanism but they did not patent the dual lug per se. As previous posters have alluded to there had been numerous dual lug systems that pre dated Mauser. The Krag patent drawing being discussed in this thread had several advanced fe...

Re: The Smithsonian Krag
Good stuff! Thanks for the free plugs on the book. It's not like it will fund my retirement, but I tease with my wife that it will. I found the Smithsonian Krag very interesting. This thread has added to the information we now have. I agree too that between the two Krag patents they covered all the ...
