Re: Problem with chambering new brass

Well I may have figured out my problem, I reamed out the chamber and checked it very frequently with a go guage, I stopped reaming when it would close tightly on a go guage. It would not close on a no go guage. These are Clymer guages which have a good reputation but they are out of spec. 20210425_1...

Re: Problem with chambering new brass

Use load data within at your own risk, this is not a recommended load, details of load within to describe a condition with my rifle. Didn't do an accuracy test today as it is too rainy to go out shooting, but what I was able to do is test fire a few rounds, so my load was 39 grains of IMR 4350 under...

Re: Problem with chambering new brass

Alright so I tried bumping the shoulder back to see how it would work, no matter how far I bumped the shoulder I still got some drag on the bolt handle. So this is really weird, checked the bolt face and some brass rubbing on it. Well I found a place that rents gunsmith tools, 4D reamers in Kalispel...

Re: Problem with chambering new brass

Thanks butlersrangers for the knowledge and history on these krag rifles, I have always had a interest in them and happy to have finally gotten one, if I rebarrel it should I restore it to original military configuration with a new stock or keep it as is? I will likely be adding another one to my sa...

Re: Problem with chambering new brass

Well thank you all for the help and I will likely bump the shoulder back and fire some rounds to see how it shoots, if it is accurate then I will likely see about fixing the chamber, if it is not then I will look at another barrel. I will update this thread as to how it shoots. Unfortunately it seem...

Re: Problem with chambering new brass

I appreciate the info on lapping the lug, weaking it is what I had assumed would happen but with some stories of people doing that made me think possibly it was an accepted thing. If it was a defective barrel it would definitely explain the problem and the potential sale to stokes kirk, it had coppe...

Re: Problem with chambering new brass

I checked out the top of the barrel for discoloration and it doesn't appear to have any, it may have been reblued but the blue is not worn where the upper handguard lies on both the reciever or barrel so it has seen much handling since a reblue if one was done, also bolt does appear to have wear and...

Re: Problem with chambering new brass

Thank you for all the help along the way, I will likely be getting a finish reamer and a set of headspace guages to chamber it. Also how do you guys feel about lapping the lug to gain headspace and also make the bolt guide or the bolt handle contact the receiver for more strength? I know people will...

Re: Problem with chambering new brass

Alright well after a long work week I got the chamber cast done this morning, it appears as if it is short chambered, oddly it almost looks as if the reamer may have been wore out as the actual shoulder is slightly shorter, fortunately I think a reamer should be able to correct it, any thoughts? 202...
