That would make sense.
The guy I bought it from said the marks were probably something from the Spanish American War. I didn't want to insult his intelligence and tell him it was manufactured in 1902. But, for $550 it was a good deal.

Re: 1896 bolt vs 1898
I compared my bolt to the pictures. It is 1896. The action is a bit clunky, for a rifle that is known as smooth, but I have never shot a Krag. Doesn't hurt to grab another bolt, and the prices are fine.
Thanks for all the assistance everyone.

Re: 1896 bolt vs 1898
Thank you Fred. I will check out Granpas.
It is very pitted where the bolt is exposed when in the receiver. No rust. The picture is bad. I will send a new one.

1896 bolt vs 1898
Hi all, I just bought a 1898 #458010. Mfg 1902?? The bolt is very pitted and was thinking to order a replacement while I am cleaning the rifle up before I shoot it. Is this bolt a 1896 and is it okay to use in a 1898? I noticed the gas vent and wondered if they used that same style bolt in an 1898? ...

Re: Strange Markings???
Yeah, I thought maybe notches for each buck, but they are symmetrical. Used to attach something, but I don't see what and how. Maybe ancient aliens.. This is my 1st Krag. Taking it apart now for a good cleaning. 30-40 is impossible to find in CA, so I will have to load my own. It is a beautiful piec...

Strange Markings???
Hi, I am new to the forum!
I recently purchased a 1898 shortened barrel 24". There are 5 v cuts on top of the receiver ?? When I took apart to clean, I notices some initials on front of the receiver too.
Anyone ever seen these before?
Thanks all!
