Model 1896 Carbine

I got to unbox my Model 1896 Carbine today, Serial 74978. Overall, it looks nice. The stock appears to be a replacement: no cartouche or Circle P acceptance. It has a “U” behind the trigger guard. I was happy to find the cleaning rods were all there! There are no hits for this rifle in SRS, although...

'Navy87Guy' - That is interesting and curious material that you located in your SRS newsletters. I am not familiar with these newsletters. I just found the archive when I was doing some research. Here’s the link to the full archive: https://archivalresearchgroup.com/springfield-research-service-arc...

Re: New Lowest Model 1898 Rifle Serial Number?

I surely would like to see those rifles in person. Without taking anything away from Frank, or his opinions, I have a very hard time believing there really was overlap between M1896 and M1898 receivers. They were not the same part and would not interchange. Why would they not keep the numbering in ...

New Lowest Model 1898 Rifle Serial Number?

When I first joined, I was told that the lowest observed serial number for a Model 1898 rifle was 109342. However, tonight I was going through the archive of SRS newsletters and found this issue from June 1981: https://archivalresearchgroup.com/wp-content/uploads/securepdfs/2024/07/Issue-Number-17-J...

Re: Where to find Type 4 Front Sight Blade

I find Poyer's 'Krag book' to be very useful, as a field book & notebook. I take it on trips for a quick reference. I have made corrective notes in the text, when I have stumbled on an error. I use the blank pages in the back for 'penciled-in' Krag data and facts, that I wish to keep handy. The...

Re: Where to find Type 4 Front Sight Blade

I just re-read Butlersranger’s early response to my post on my early Model 1898 (before I got a copy of Poyer’s book) and saw his comment that Poyer’s “types” are annoying to serious collectors. I will henceforth not use that nomenclature! :)

Here’s a little better view…it’s a closed eight.

Re: Questions on my Model 1898

I don't understand your response to my last post. I was trying to communicate that your blade, (intended for the model 1896 rear-sight), should measure approximately .285" tall, when removed from the Krag fixed front-sight base. The later Krag rear-sights were partnered with .410" to .413...

It was missing the label for the model 1896 rifle sight.
Poyer lists the 1896 Rifle sight as being 0.285” high sight…the same as the 1896 Type 2.

Photos located on imgur.com, will likely soon be unviewable to KCA members, using your posted link.
I can’t figure out how to post photos directly…using a service is not my preference!
