On their website they say they do, but I understand it's very different than when Mallory was there

Re: Springfield Research Service 4 Volumes

Whig - Thank you for bringing this back up. Researching - when there's a trail - is a joy. Thank you again. I do believe I'll hold off on any posts until I have my carbine in hand, but hope to have some good information laid out by then. I DID find that the Lt Gignoux, who led the First Nev Vol Cav ...

Redfield Peep Screw for side plate

Hey all, am trying to find a new screw to work for the sideplate and sight with a Krag Redfield 70KH peep. I understand it's a .187x26tpi screw - and that there are a handful of Krag and 1903 springfield screws that are the same. I don't want to order the wrong thing.... I found this: https://www.li...

Re: Chamber differences and tough to close bolt

Thank you all for the input. I'll keep it ALL in mind when I finally get the rifle back out to shoot.

In the meantime, I ordered a single stage cast iron Lee press today (my regular press is the classic turret which is a cast iron base but the turret is milled aluminum and the turret ring...

Re: Chamber differences and tough to close bolt

Fred, I appreciate the time responding!

The cases were a mix. The R-P had been loaded previously, but I do NOT know how many times. I doubt many. They were a gift with the rifle from a dear uncle.

The Winchester cases were from a box of ammo that was fired once (some in the ri...

Re: Chamber differences and tough to close bolt

Butlers - Both the rifle and cut down are 1898 ALTHOUGH the bolt in the carbine is a 1896. So it certainly could be a tighter headspace, although that would mean the 1898 bolt in the 1898 rifle is holding the shell rim further away from the chamber - as the 1898 closed easily and the 1896 met resist...

Re: Chamber differences and tough to close bolt

Hey Fred, thank you.

I suppose I could try a different die. I had two shell holders, both produced the same results, so I sanded one and mic'd the edges to make sure I was "flat". That produced a shell that was pressed further into the die and perhaps moved the shoulder a little...
