Re: J.F.C. Stock Cartouche on 1898 Krag Rifle?

Didn't Mallory make a distinction between the "script JFC" cartouche, found on .22 Gallery rifles, from the "block J.F.C." cartouche, he stated (erroneously) was on Philippine Constabulary rifles?

Re: J.F.C. Stock Cartouche on 1898 Krag Rifle?

Dick, It seems that Mallory and Brophy, maybe Poyer also (I'm at work and don't have my books here) all attribute the J. F. C. Cartouche, in block letters, to represent PCs made at Springfield. That's my source. The real PCs were only made at Manila with the M.O.D. cartouche. Farmer has certainly sh...

Re: Want To Put An Unusual Barrel On A Krag

I think rebarreling on a larger scale was due to availability of surplus ammunition. .30-40 Krag and .303 British went through periods of easy availability and cheap pricing more than .32 caliber ammunition.

Re: Want To Put An Unusual Barrel On A Krag

The SAAMI Max chamber pressure associated with .32 Winchester is listed as 42,000 CUP. When you start going over 40,000 CUP, you run the risk of damaging or cracking the single bolt lug on the .30-40 Krag action, which is designed for max 40,000 CUP. Interesting in theory but just stick with .30-40 ...

Yes, keep the stock. It adds some mystique to your Krag.

Re: J.F.C. Stock Cartouche on 1898 Krag Rifle?

The Springfield Research Service records list some Krag rifles with serial numbers in the 364,XXX range as having Cole Elliptical Bores with a 10" twist. I have never seen this mentioned before and don't know what it is. Maybe someone else has seen this information. The exact serial number of y...

Re: J.F.C. Stock Cartouche on 1898 Krag Rifle?

Front sight looks good, Model 1901 rifle rear sight looks good, sling looks good, bayonet and scabbard look good. It will be nice to see more pictures but it looks like you may have a winner! Bore condition will be important as well as bolt and chamber. Are cleaning rods and oiler in the butt stock?...

Re: J.F.C. Stock Cartouche on 1898 Krag Rifle?

If this Krag's serial number is 35407X, I barely can read the serial number from the picture, it could be in the range of a Model 1899 Krag carbine. Pictures, of course, will help a lot! Carbines have a barrel exactly 22 inches long measured from the muzzle to the closed bolt face. Rifles have 30 in...
