Re: Krag 1897 styer
Hello and welcome.

Your Krag rifle is the same as the standard Norwegian Model 1894 military service rifle, but it was not produced in the Kongsberg Vapenfabrikk. In 1896 and 1897 Norwegian Model 1894 rifles were also built by the firm Steyr in that firearms factory.

Military K...

Re: 1896 Carbine stock mystery
I have heard from a couple other Krag collectors that tell me there are 1896 replacement stocks that were made after the 1899 carbines. Since the late 1898 and 1899 carbine models did not have the saddle ring, replacement stocks for any 1896 carbine remaining in service did not require the saddle ri...

1896 Carbine stock mystery
<r>Here are two 1896 Krag carbine stocks. One has the saddle ring where it should be on the left side. The other stock also has the 1896 relief cut for the bolt handle but is not inletted for the saddle ring?

They are not cut down rifle stocks. Both are the same correct length and have n...

Re: Vintage Target Scope and Mount on 1898 Krag
Wonderful custom Krag. A few more photos would get me even more excited.

When I was a young man, fresh out of school, just married and starting my career, I remember looking at one of the neatest Krag rifles at a gun show in Southern Wisconsin. It was a single shot varmint rifle like your...

Re: Vintage Target Scope and Mount on 1898 Krag
Good information for Krag shooters not familiar with the old style target scopes in sliding mounts. This one on the Krag does clamp tight at the forward ring. I don't think it will slide on recoil like the Lyman or Unertl scopes and mounts.

In addition to shooting Krags in the CMP vintag...

Vintage Target Scope and Mount on 1898 Krag
<r>In the 1920's the W. Stokes Kirk company marketed a simple scope rail that could be installed on a standard Krag. The standard rear sight was removed and the dovetail rail installed using the same two sight mounting holes.

Our good friend the late Col Bill Mook had some of the rails du...

Re: Military Krags at Camp Perry or Sea Girt
Interesting question. Dick Culver in a 2002 article about the 1909 Excellence in Competition or EIC (LEG) matches states that the Krag was the prescribed rifle for the National Trophy Matches through 1906. In 1907 the M1903 rifle became the official and only approved service rifle for the matches. T...

Shooting the Krag .22 Gallery Rifle
<r>We took our Model 1896 Krag with Stevens Pope .22 Cal barrel to the last outdoor 100 yard .22 match of the season. She turned a few heads.

We fire from the prone at 100 Yards on the reduced Palma Match target. First time I have fired this rifle at 100 Yards. Used the tiny flip up peep...

Re: A Pair Of Little Norwegians
Yes they would both be M1906. The boys rifle receiver is dated 1907 with a low 4 digit serial number. The original and damaged receiver on the .22 Cal trainer version was / is also dated 1907. Also a four digit. The barrels, receivers and most numbers were matching, so the .22 Cal rifle was not a re...

A Pair Of Little Norwegions
Here are two interesting Norwegian Krag variations. They are both training rifle sized for young shooters. The one in the foreground is the Boys Training Rifle (more like a small carbine) in 6.5X55. The rifle in the background is the .22 Cal trainer.

The .22 trainer was a real train wreck...
