Re: .30-40 cartridge for coastal artillery practice

What was the purpose of these shells? With the other type, where the action with a full length barrel was centered in the breech, the purpose was to train the pointer and trainer to accurately aim the big gun. Probably done with a gun set up at a base's rifle range. What kind of accuracy could be ex...

Re: Remington Rolling Block 4-S (Military and American Boy Scout)

Please measure the twist on both rifles and post it here. Twist rates on barrels made for Shorts or Shorts-Longs vary considerably by manufacturer.

Re: Remington Rolling Block 4-S (Military and American Boy Scout)

Interesting! Please post size & weight when you get the rifles. I assume that these are kid-sized rifles. It was OK for Junior to play soldier in 1910, maybe even in the back yard. I'm a serious student of .22 Short ammo. The most accurate stuff you can buy are the CCI Target Shorts. In full-siz...

Re: Shooters World Match Rifle

I'm with Fred. I've never heard of Shooters World Match Rifle powder. There is a "relative burn rate" chart on the Reloader 19 topic two topics below this. Once upon a time, military surplus powders were sold in large containers, maybe 50 lbs. I remember seeing 4350 and 4831 sold that way....

Re: Never underestimate a Krag!

I'm interested in the scope and mounts. The scope looks somewhat like a Fecker, highly unsuitable for any military application. I have a block front mount for a 1903 Springfield (purchased from Unertl Co. about 1968), so it's not all fantasy. The bipod probably does wonders for accuracy.

Re: The Famous Krag Cast Bullet

Lyman 311284 was the first bullet mould I ever bought, 1965. I started out using it in my Bannerman-Krag, later in my Springfields. Never tried it at 600, but it was OK at 200. Probably performed better than either the rifle or the shooter. Still have it.

I originally used it with HiVel #2.

Re: Sad fate of #482

My late friend (died 2002) may have been the original culprit. He had a 3-digit, #4XX range, 1894-dated action that he rebarreled to .35 Remington. Had a hacked-up stock that he refinished. He wasn't a computer guy, didn't know about collector sites. Restoration would have required components that h...

Re: Not a Krag hand guard

IIRC, the musket is considerably rarer than the military carbine. But the carbine has more appeal. If I had a table at a well-advertised show, I'd put a $3700 tag on on the carbine. If I had a musket, particularly an original NRA musket, I'd leave it at home.

Re: Reloader 19 in 30-40 Rifle

That looks like a pre-WW2 reloading manual, maybe 85 years old. Many different powders have appeared since then. Some better, some not. I greatly regret the passing of HiVel 2 and SR 4759, but some of the recent stuff comes close to duplicating performance.
