Re: Identifying my buddy's new Krag Carbine

<r>That is a shame. Your friend is going to turn a very rare and desirable Krag carbine, worth $2,000 to $3,000, into a $200 POS. (And spend money doing it)! Bubba is alive and unreasonable.<br /><br />I would trade five Krag 'Deer Rifles' (with fine bores) and $200 cash money for his 'intended proj...

Re: bought a new Krag today

I stand corrected. Parashooter reports having done it. <br /><br />Armory workers operating under time constraints (and with spare new hand-guards) would certainly have availed themselves of a shortcut and not bothered with unnecessary disassembly. <br /><br />(I am not in a hurry and can take time ...

Re: bought a new Krag today

<r>When my 'new' Krag arrives, it may offer an opportunity to test otherwise.<IMG src="https://kragcollectorsassociation.org/kca/phpBB3/images/yabbfiles/Attachments/hand_guard_spring.jpg"><s>[img]</s><URL url="https://kragcollectorsassociation.org/kca/phpBB3/images/yabbfiles/Attachments/hand_guard_s...

Re: bought a new Krag today

<r>I find myself in a minor (and rare) disagreement with 'Parashooter', whose knowledge I much respect. <br /><br />I am certainly not about to risk cracking a hand-guard to prove the point.<br /><br />IMHO - My eyes tell me, the clearance 'inletting', of the Krag stock barrel-channel, is insufficie...

Re: bought a new Krag today

'Bill': Others, more knowledgeable than I, have said 'Bowers' is very incorrect on Krags.<br /><br />It is very tentative giving a U.S. Krag an exact manufacture date, because of the way they were assembled at Springfield Armory. A numbered Receiver could have 'laid around' for a bit before it was g...

Re: bought a new Krag today

'Bill Rodgers': What source "specifically states" that your model 1898 Krag rifle, serial number 153798, was built in 1899? <br /><br />Krag receivers were numbered prior to being assembled into complete arms. Krags were not built, accepted, or issued in numerical order. Some estimates wou...

Another Sub Target Gun Machine Krag?

<r>I bought 'a pig in a poke' today and successfully bid on a model 1898 Krag on GunBroker. The price was reasonable, probably because of the stock 'cut out' holes and lack of sights.<br /><br />I believe the 1901 cartouched stock and hand-guard were altered to accept the fixtures for a Cummings Sub...

Re: Finally...I am a US Krag rifle owner

<r>'pcarpenter': The Pacific K1 & K2 base is normally easy to remove from a Krag receiver. It is only locked in place by one set-screw, that makes contact with the receiver where it is machined for the cut-off detent pin. If your's is 'stuck', I imagine it is because of dried grease or rust.<br ...

Re: Finally...I am a US Krag rifle owner

<r>'pcarpenter': I think 'Parashooter' covered what probably happened in your contact with 'JoeDe'.<br /><br />Thanks for posting pics of your bolt parts. Your bolt body is an 1896 bolt. It looks like your mainspring is 33.5 coils (used on 1896 and early 1898 rifles), and your Firing pin is U.S.<br ...

Re: 1896 Carbine sights

The value of a correct model 1896 carbine sight is going to be dependent on condition, however, on ebay auctions, they seem to bring $400 to $550, if memory serves me right.
