Re: carbine purchase

ALL carbines (even the two full-stocked M1892 prototypes) originally had the swivel bar, when first made, up through the 5000 Model 1898s. However, many arms, particularly the thin-wristed 1895s, were ultimately fitted with new stocks due to breakage, etc., and some of these lacked swivel bars.<br /...

Re: MORE 1895 CARBINE confusion

Unkie,

You appear to have a completely correct (including the rare 1896C rear sight which now sells for over $700, all by itself!) fairly early 1896 Carbine, which has been restocked with what is called a field-replacement stock. These all had 3 rod holes, but did not have cartouches, and...

Re: 1899 22"

Hate to rain on your parade right after I "gave you the route" as it were, but I do not think you will EVER find such a stock on the loose. That is the rare part of the gun - the only Krags with that cartouche ARE the ROTC guns. And, apparently, only those converted at SA have it. Guns don...

Re: 1899 22"

Tanker,

I think you are 100% correct on your ID. The marks on your barrel had to have been from the upper band. Back in the 70s, NO ONE was "faking" scarce Krags. Many were sporterized, but those that were still military were basically pretty honest. As far as is known, NO actua...

Re: 1895 carbine? I have done my homework

Kyle,

ALL of the early carbines are really Model 1896s. Collectors now call the VERY early ones, with the 1895 date, thin wrist, two rod holes (some guns only), sharp-cornered extractor, smaller safety lever (some guns only), the "1895 variant". The bolt gas hole issue runs well...

Re: serial number

No, you cannot tell from the number, but that is WELL after they started marking carbines "Model 1899", so, THAT will tell you, infallibly. If it is marked "Model 1898" it was originally a rifle - if "Model 1899" it was a carbine.

Re: 1895 carbine? I have done my homework

There definitely ARE numerous carbines with "1895" dated receivers. They will be just like 1896 carbines in almost all respects. I have posted pics of several of my Krags at www.picturetrail.com/sa4570af. Your gun should look EXACTLY like my 24893. The correct rear sight and handguard (if ...

Re: Krag single shot carbine?

I believe the modern, and extremely strong, Ruger #3 Carbine, introduced in the 1970s (?) as a lower-priced alternative to their top-of-the-line #1 single shot, was originally chambered in .30-40 Krag, as well as .45-70. I do not know if it is still in production.

Re: 1894 Springfield Krag

The lower serial numbers ARE less common, because they were used harder, and, they are definitely UNcommon - if not rare - when found in "as-issued" configuration. The first picture in the Krag album on my picture page will show you a full-length unaltered M1892 rifle.

Most of t...

Re: 1894 Springfield Krag

Sorry, but am not clear on your question. What did you mean by "anything special"? There are only four 68xx rifles listed with SRS, so the odds are 25-1 against there being any unique info available for that particular gun. When you say "altered", did you mean the official altera...
