Re: 1896 Carbine SRS check please

Hi Fred, Sorry your serial is not listed, but it is sure in the midst of a lot of other '96 carbines. 68830 9th CAV., 68832 6th CAV., and 68844 San Antonio Ars. for few listed. As long as all seems correct, I believe it to be legit. Have fun. John

Re: hi all new here and got a ??

Hi BP45, As others have stated there are a lot of things that indicate a mixmaster. Your rear sight is a '96 rifle sight as carbine sights would go to 20 with C marking, Poyer puts DOB approx Jan. '98, Your stock is a '99 replacement for '96 carbines. Your serial number is not listed in SRS. Swivels...

Re: New Krag

Welcome, Your serial number puts it about Sept. '98 according to Poyer's book. Serial puts it in the carbine range, but without the '98 cartouched stock and a lot more details there is no way to verify if it was originally a carbine or a rifle cut down. You state it is a replacement stock of sorts ...

Re: 1896 Krag questions

Ean, Not listed in SRS. Closest is 51707 CO M 51st USV INF. Aside from missing rear sight, hand guard and addition of a peep, D.O.B. approx Jan.1897, that is about all the info. I'm sure you will enjoy shooting it with fond memories. Have fun, John

Re: 1898 Krag Help

Hi, Your serial number puts it around May,'99. The closest SRS listing is 201180 CO L 42ND USV INF. You will probably not be able to find out any more of it's individual history. It is hard to tell you much without photos. Take a look at the photo section and try to compare against other 1898 rifles...

Re: Information for the first timer.

Hello, First off your serial number must be 309995 instead of 809995. Numbers did not go that high. #309 would put it in 1901. #309 is not listed in the SRS so just about zero chance of tracking it. Parts; check here in the classifed / for sale, Gunbroker, Ebay, a goggle search will give you some pa...

Re: Receiver/Stock date question

Welcome, There would be just about zero chance that the stock was with the Krag at birth, but remember Krags were still in service in '02. Many stocks were replaced due to usage damage and after 112 years of who knows how many owners any stock dated after the receiver date is legit IMHO. Stocks were...

Re: New to Krags, looking for positive ID

Al, The fancy P in a circle is the final finish proof mark. The other letters over the date are J.S.A. for the inspector ( J. Sumner Adams). John

Re: New to Krags, looking for positive ID

Hi Al, I just looked at your photos. The stock is the 1899 version. I can't make out the sights. You say the front sight is brazed on. Is it mortised into the barrel? Is the muzzle crowned or flat? Check the OD of the muzzle just behind the crown. John
