Re: New guy in town
I'm not sure which Lyman sight you have. This may need to be removed or elevated to remove bolt.
Bolt Removal: Open bolt and draw it to the rear. Hold Krag with trigger guard against your belly and magazine door up. Your right fingers should grip the action and your extended right thumb rest on...

Re: Bore condition
From my experience, a dark pitted bore never comes clean and continues staining patches. However, I have been amazed that such bores will sometimes shoot well. It is always good to get an opinion from a veteran shooter or competent gunsmith. Some old bores have been restored to a degree by lapping w...

Re: Restoring a 1896?
Fred: Your question got me measuring some Krag and 03 & 03-A3 Springfield barrels. My 03-A3 steps-up from .620" (in front of sight band) to .649" (behind the front sight band). My RIA 1903 steps-up from .621" to .647". I never realized that 1903 & 03-A3 barrels change dia...

Re: Krag Sporter Restoration
Dan: S&S Firearms, Glendale, N.Y., offers a repro. Krag front sight base that can be brazed or silver-soldered on. (Their extensive catalog can be viewed on-line). They also probably have the hinge-pin you said you need.
A simpler sight solution is to get a 1903 Springfield front sight ban...

Re: Krag Sporter Restoration
If your Krag's receiver has not already been drilled for a scope, it is a pity that it will be happening now. The wood and metal parts of your Krag look quite nice and seem worth preserving. If the barrel were cut to 22 inches and a reproduction front sight or '03 banded front sight were put on, it ...

Re: Restoring a 1896?
Fred: If your Krag barrel is actually 24" (from muzzle to bolt face), I estimate 3 inches of fore-end was cut off of the stock and the modified front band was moved rearward.
The quality of the inletting on your stock suggests its original to me.

Re: Restoring a 1896?
If it were my Krag, I would put on a 1903 Springfield front sight or Lyman Banded front sight, and put on a common original Krag rifle rear sight, and complete the Mannlicher look. You could play with your Krag as a shooter and enjoy that mint bore, while you slowly decide and assemble parts for a w...

Re: Strange looking 1898 carbine
btsman: Your Krag appears to be a Norwegian Carbine Model 1897 for Mountain Artillery and Royal Engineers. It was made in 1901 at the Kongsberg Arms Factory (Crown with "K" marking). It should be in 6.5x55mm (same cartridge as the Swedish Mauser). Your carbine appears to have the plate for...

Re: 6.5 x 55
If your rifle was originally chambered for the 6.5x55 mm cartridge, it is probably a Norwegian Service Rifle or Carbine. These normally have the date of manufacture on the top of the receiver ring and a small crown over a fancy 'K' (for Konberg Armory). Some early Norwegian Krags were built by Steyr...
