Re: Springfield Armory Model 1899 target rifle

I also thought Pancho Villa & Associates. Does the tube sight have any glass lenses? Maybe a J. W. Sidel scope?

Re: Springfield Armory model 1898 target rifle

The long tube is a tube sight, normally used in "iron sight only" competition. Why it would be on the Krag sporter is anyone's guess.

Tube sights are usually adjusted with an external micrometer adjustable mount. The front tube mount is one of those, but is in the wrong place. ...

Re: Fred C. Ness & Krag sporters

Thanks for that post, Gnoahhh.

I have not heard of the DST before. Was the maker the same Pacific from San Francisco that made the old loading tools, dies, etc?

And what sort of barrel does your Maximum Lovell have? Have you slugged it?

Re: Fred C. Ness & Krag sporters

Thanks for posting that old thread. I recall many of the now-deceased correspondents as truly decent gentlemen. I still have the scans on cutting up a Krag stock from the Ellis Lenz book. Will post them if anyone has not seen them. I can hear the purists groan now. I was "waterman" on thos...

Re: 1873 Trapdoor Question

Reads to me that the OP has a nice stock and now needs a rifle to make it complete.

Re: A question for anyone out there that casts

Have you slugged the barrel of your carbine?

Have you checked Buffalo Arms and their dreadful new website? They have the Lyman version of the original FA bullet, 20:1, lubed with SPG but sized .458, About $31 per box. If you use these as a starting point, you may learn a lot.

H...

Re: Fred C. Ness & Krag sporters

The basic cases for the R2 are back in production by Jamison. IIRC they are also called Captech International. Cost is about $2 each in small quantities.

Re: Fred C. Ness & Krag sporters

More about Krags in other calibers: The .25-35 Winchester was a rather common choice for rebarreling an old Krag. I think I have seen 3 over the years. If one came along and was decent, I might be tempted.

Ness reported on one in .25 Remington Rimless, with a 3-shot magazine. Was that a ...

Fred C. Ness & Krag sporters

Ness was one of the technical guys at the NRA in the late 1940s. He wrote 2 books; "Practical Dope on the Big Bores" and a similar one on .22 cal. rifles, concentrating mostly on centerfires. The guy was a terrible writer and an even worse proof-reader, but he mentions several of the semi-...

Re: 1873 Trapdoor Question

I am fascinated with the idea of a .410 bore Trapdoor. Looks like a lot of fun. Were it mine, I would not be in a hurry to restore it. Is it really a .410 or simply a .45-70 that someone shot .410 shells in? There is no reason that you can't put a shot load into a .45-70 case and use it as a "....
