Re: Improvement at the Range
Butlersrangers, Thanks for your detailed response. I think the good results 1 had with the 180 gr Hornady RN bullets confirms your point about some rifles not liking boat tail bullets. The 165 grainers were boat tail rounds, and the 180 grainers are flat based. I will save the 165 gr BTSP's for my ....

Improvement at the Range
I recently had some encouraging range results with my 1899 Krag carbine. In a post a few weeks ago I noted I was switching from Varget and R/L 15 to AA 2520 powder for reloading 2 distinct Hornady Interlock bullets. The brass is also Hornady, reloaded 6X, trimmed, chamfered, polished, and primed wit...

Neck Sizing
I finally have my 1899 Carbine shooting pretty well using Hornady Interlock bullets 1.e., 165 gr BTSP's (39 grs AA 2520), 180 gr RN's (36 grs AA 2520), and 220 gr RN's (33 grs R/15). At 75 yards I'm generally getting 3" - 4" groups from a bench rest. Recall, when I first acquired my Krag i...

Re: AA 2520 Powder
Thanks Madsenshooter, I saw that recall when it was announced. Luckily, I had purchased 3 lbs. of AA 2520 a few months before the announcement, and those 3 bottles were not involved in the recall. As I mentioned in an earlier posting, it is my universal/"go to" powder for my 3, .30-06 bolt...

Re: AA 2520 Powder
Many thanks to Parashooter for the data he recently sent me on using AA 2520 Powder for reloading .30-40 Krag cartridges using 180 gr Hornady RN Interlock bullets. Since acquiring my Model 1899 carbine 2 years ago, my goal had been to develop a deer hunting round for ranges from 50 yds. out to 200 y...

Re: AA 2520 Powder
Parashooter, Thanks very much for your advice and data! I have never used the QuickLOAD program, but I will pull it up. Is it free? Based upon the load data you provided, in reloading the 180 gr Hornadys, I will start at 36 grains and work my way to 39 grains in half gr increments.

AA 2520 Powder
After a 40 year hiatus from reloading, in 1999 I got back into it because I had inherited my grandfather's Savage model 99 rifle chambered in .303 Savage, and I could not find any factory ammo for it. I bought Lee reloading equipment and Lee's book on reloading which listed AA 2520 for reloading .30...

Re: on this day in 1898
Those uniforms look heavy for the summertime in Cuba. I was at "Gitmo" in the winter of 1967, it was unbearably hot.
I can spot only one trooper with a rifle, it is a Krag carbine. I assume all of TR's troops were issuesd a sidearm, probably an 1873 SAA Colt revolver.
