I guess what I'm asking, is do you think the NJ caused the damage, or, did it just remove the rust/crud that was covering already existing damage ?

So, Naval Jelly "decarbonizes" steel? Other than making the metal look like it went thru a fire, what does that mean, and how does it affect the steel?

I have a front (upper) barrel band complete with both screws and the stacking swivel. Condition is very good +.

As an engineer I once knew liked to say, "It's fine as far as form, fit, and function goes, but it looks like crap." True in this case, no matter how fine the carving is.

Hoppes has a bench rest in their line that is not too pricey. I've had mine for years and it works just fine. I've seen a few of the homemade scissor jack versions. They are a bit too "Bubba" for my taste, but hey, whatever works.
