Re: Culvers Krag forum

Someone said their server had been knocked out by the recent storm in the Northwest? The timing certainly fits, but I thought they were located more in the central part of the country.

Re: iii1898 kRAG

You actually have a Model 1896 (not 1898) Rifle which was made at the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts. Are you saying that the words "U.S. Springfield Armory" do NOT appear on the gun, by the serial number?

The Model 1898 did not start until about 109000. Also, I looked at t...

Re: Krag Book Recommendation-Brophy or Mallory/Ols

The Poyer Krag book is available, for $19.95 (I believe) from www.northcapepubs.com which is owned by Joe Poyer.

It contains a wealth of data, some of which is not available in either Mallory or Brophy. In some ways it presents the info better than the older, more expensive, works. As far...

Re: NEWBIE

Thank goodness you did not pay any more! The modifications you describe have totally removed ALL collector value from the rifle, so it WOULD be a good candidate for reenactor usage.

No historical data is available for ANY gun meeting your numerical notation (records are blank between 220...

Re: new krag owner (sorta), need help

I know very little about the Danish Krags, but you are correct about the caliber. Ammo IS hard to come by in the US. Also, Danish Krags are seldom seen here, and IF the gun is as nice, and as complete, as you say, I would think that you could, if properly marketed, sell it for possibly as high as EI...

Re: Newbie 1896 restoration help

Sorry for the delay, but at least I remembered - no small thing these days!

I measured the distance from end of wood to muzzle on six rifles. Two flat-muzzle 1892s were 3.135" and 3.147", a spread of .012", and an average of 3.141". A mixture of M1896/M1898 rounded muz...

Re: krag rifles

Cannot do too much with the serial numbers as listed - IF you are going to give partials (and you should not have to) you need to give the beginning, not the end!

Most "1898 Carbines" are cut-down rifles, which were made up by bubba, NOT Springfield. Barrel length should be 22&q...

Re: Newbie 1896 restoration help

You have correctly described the procedure. Some people make the joint right back at the shoulder, as it is a bit less visible, but midband would be easier. Yes, epoxy is the way to go - some people also use pins, but the joint really is not stressed to where that is required. Be SURE that NO epoxy ...

Re: 92 "carbine"

Your analysis certainly seems valid. Brophy will get you through it! The sight is worth checking on, as 96C and 98C specimens command several hundred dollars, just for the sight.
