Re: Krag rifle

My favorite plinking load uses the Belding and Mull 311169 spitzer design. It was Belding and Mull's version of the "Squibb" designed Shuetzen bullet, and other companies also made versions of it, for example the Lyman/Ideal 311413. Hensley and Cramer also made a version. It shoots best in...

Re: Newbie from Pittsburgh - 1898 purchased today

You should get in touch with Peter Georgiades, the owner of Kraghaus, who is in your neck of the woods. He restores Krags. http://www.kraghaus.com/ You have it looking more original, just needs a full length barrel, available from the CMP and the forestock extended.

Re: 1897 modifications to M1892 rifles

God only knows when specific changes were made, and they weren't made to all. I mean that not all rifles got all changes. An example would be one 92/96 I have, 22018. It has a later sideplate, a 96 bolt sleeve with the changes made to the safety, but never got the bolt hold open notch. Oddly it stil...

Re: Unusual Lyman Krag sight on ebay

I see nothing like it in the Lyman section of Stroebel's book. "Old Gunsights and Riflescopes". The ebay seller's pics don't help a whole lot, naught but black. Looking at images of the Lee, it appears they would be room for the sight in top of the bolt. The Lee bolt has the right profile ...

Re: Troubleshooting new 98 Krag

Unless you're adept with small tools, you don't want to buy a cutoff that you'd need to stake a spring and plunger in. Some rifles work ok without the cutoff shaft, some don't.

Re: Took my M1898 rifle to Camp Perry

<r>Alternatively, you could keep the charge the same, but after sizing and not lubing your bullets (I use a push through sizer for this). Bake them in a 400-425 degree oven for an hour. (Electric oven, temp swing is too high on a gas oven, never mind how I know that). Quench them in cold water, then...

Re: Took my M1898 rifle to Camp Perry

<r>In the area of 37gr I've used RL19 and an Accurate surplus powder, DP85. DP85 is a ball powder supposed to burn about Ramshot Hunter speed. Both are only slightly faster burning than 4831. I've found it sorta hard to guesstimate how fast a cast bullet will be going with a given charge. Lot of var...
