Re: 1896 Replacement Hand Guard Fit
He doesn't like to take them back, but will. I purchased one of his for the 1901 sight. Somehow the sight slot got cut off center. The handguard looked fine, until you put the sight on. It would force the handguard to rotate left, leaving a large space between handguard and stock on the right. We ar...

Re: Cast Bullets in my 1898
<r>My 92/96 rifles like the NOE 311365, a spire point. I see NOE has a 5 cavity in stock. http://noebulletmolds.com/orders/catalog/index.php?cPath=30&sort=2a&page=3 I generally use slower burning powders than most cast bullet shooters. The cast bullets seem to like the lower pressure. Group ...

Re: First Krag
Well, if Paul ever gets around to loading the cast bullets I gave him, you all can get together at Washtenaw's cast bullet matches. I might manage one or two trips this year. It's a long way from Upper Appalachia to lower Michigun!

Re: 1898 with question about muzzle/barrel
Good idea Doug, I'd be wary of it even with the pin. Lots of these shortened rifles were shortened just so the younger people on the drill teams could use them. They may not have been intended for any purpose other than firing blanks. When you send a bullet through it, it might come off, even with t...

Extrapolating Varget data for the .308, which is close in capacity to the 30/40, one can go as low as 22gr to a max of 38gr. Velocity will range from 1600fps with the start charge to 2300fps with the max charge. Around 32gr should give you 2000fps, which will be close to the sight graduations, despi...

Re: adding a scope
It doesn't. Tension from that big leaf spring holds little hardened feet, aka set screws, against the receiver. The whole thing comes off by rotating 90 degrees. Return to zero is pretty good. Originally, they came with a barrel band sized for the Krag, which one would have to inlet the stock for. D...

<r>Then there's this way, which requires two holes to be drilled and tapped so that a screw on dovetail can be mounted. Those holes go between the standard sight mounting holes, so they are covered by the rear sight when it's in place The mount is a Miller Kodiak Dreamount from the 50's and 60's. Lo...

Re: New Member, New (to me) Krag Sporter
Yes it would, as many Krag barrels have a bore diameter of .301". Many unhappy casters have found that Lyman is making molds that drop the bullets with a nose as small as .299". This makes them somewhat inaccurate in the Krag. There are a couple of companies that consider such things, NOE ...

Re: Krag bolt problem- please help
The cocking knob was bobbed, as you put it, at Springfield Armory. A little experiment that didn't work out.
