Re: Where to go from here?

Indeed. Krags are not a means to an end, but rather the end in and of itself!

Re: Krag side-plate mount

Were it me I would solder the scope base to a side plate and not risk the screw threads being too shallow. Use a separate plate from the one that's original to the rifle, too, for posterity reasons.

Re: Burmese Krag

Buy the gun, not the story. To me it is a buggered up Krag, the worth of which lies in the metal and bore condition. After throwing away the stock, what's left is worth less than a quarter of the starting bid, IMO, for what it's worth.

One would think also that they would have at least bl...

Re: new barrel for krag

I recently re-barreled a custom sporter with a new Criterion barrel. I was in the same boat as the OP in that I wanted to retain the 24" barrel length. I simply bought a 30" Criterion and cut it to 24". The lack of a front sight mortise didn't bother me as I sweated on a ramp front si...

Re: I'm a newbie here to

Heck yeah put it in some kind of stock and enjoy shooting it! (But only if the bore condition warrants it.) A few hours with some emery cloth and fine grit sandpaper and then rust blue it- it'll look good and it's something you can do yourself at home.

Re: Pocket oiler

Looks like it would be the perfect thing to carry Hoppes#9 in, for using the applicator to dab a drop behind the ears when one needs to freshen up his "man scent"! :)

Re: Is anything right about this Krag?

Overall pretty wonky. I would give $300-350 for it as a shooter, if I needed another one of them.

Re: Cracked Stock

Looks good indeed. No need to leave it clamped up for days. Overnight is quite sufficient- it won't move after that. Maybe waiting a couple days before subjecting it to the rigors of a forced march over the Mindanao mountains would be a good idea though.

Re: Cracked Stock

Epoxy only needs a couple of molecules of thickness to effect a bond. Plenty enough can be worked into that crack.

As for acetone containing trace amounts of oil, if it does it's such a small amount as to be totally inconsequential. We use it to de-oil teak before gluing up, I use it as m...

Re: Cracked Stock

When in doubt, use epoxy. Yellow glue is ok, but the integrity of the joint depends on coating both surfaces thoroughly. Since you have very narrow confines in which to spread the glue around following those protocols would be problematic. Just get the epoxy in there and close and open the joint a f...
