Re: Advice on refinishing wood?
I have finished the restore for now. Gun was completely taken apart and boiled to convert red to black oxide, then steel wooled with 0000. If I ever do this again it will definitely be with a carding wheel. The wood was finished with 2 coats of WATCO Danish Oil Dark Walnut and a Johni-Ring. Im very ...

Re: Advice on refinishing wood?
Update: I have chosen to use danish oil and wax as my finish. The danish oil is drying now. It looks lighter than the correct finish but I like the way it looks and as of now it's just a sporter anyways. Also I did attempt to make the relief under the bolt handle. It came out so-so which is better t...

Re: Advice on refinishing wood?
I like that video / method. I like the way that the wax effects to look, but am a little concerned that it would make the rifle slick / leave fingprints. What do you think?

Re: Advice on refinishing wood?
When I use scotchbrite and laquer thinner on the handgaurd the little "studs" should become bright metal. Any good way of dulling it after stain? Mild acid like naval jelly? I've used that before to take bright steel to gray.

Re: Advice on refinishing wood?
I'll be honest, I didn't have a great grasp on bedding.
This helped https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rifle_bedding
Thank you for the pictures. I'm looking forward to some woodworking as I finish. I'll be sure to post the results, abomination or not

Re: Advice on refinishing wood?
I have done some fitting on a musket kit I built a little while ago. While in the process of refinishing I will take a look at these areas as it will be the best time to make modifications. I can understand why I would want to relieve pressure on the stock, especially on thin areas, but why would I ...

Re: Advice on refinishing wood?
It didn't not occur to me to remove and install the handgaurd that way, but that makes a lot of sense. I need to pick up more Scotch Brite pads and having that furniture stripper probably wouldn't be a bad idea as a backup. Is there any stain I should look for or just anything reddish brown? Oil or ...

Re: Advice on refinishing wood?
I got excited and started before seeing your post. I will correct the mistake when it breaks
I already have BLO and will pick up some denatured alcohol this weekend. I can't wait to get a better finish on this.
Thank you for the knowledge!
