Advice on refinishing wood?
I just bought a sporterized Krag which had previously been refinished. The markings had been sanded off by a previous owner, so I'm not concerned about damaging an original finish. Im not wanting to remove dings, scratches, and dents in the wood. Just wanting to have a smoother finish on top of the ...

Re: IMR 4198 And Confusing (to me) Load Data
I just looked up that powder. I wonder why they discontinued it? Its seems like there are already a million powders for every purpose. What's one more?

Re: IMR 4198 And Confusing (to me) Load Data
I only started reloading during covid because I couldn't afford to shoot my .308 as much as I wanted. Now I'm realizing its potential in less common cartridges like the Krag. I think 30-40 krag is 3 to 4 dollars a round some places. I'd have to quit. Anyways, I don't plan on being caught without com...

Re: IMR 4198 And Confusing (to me) Load Data
Wow, asked and answered! Glad to see that someone else is using this setup of powder, bullet, and gun! I don't know that I'll be able to make groups that tight with irons, but at 26gns a shot I should be able to make plenty of practice rounds. Good to see max load with pressure. I could not find tha...

IMR 4198 And Confusing (to me) Load Data
Speer has load data for 30-40 Krag. For 130, 180, and 200 grain bullets they have listed IMR 4198 for reduced loads. Why in the world would it work for the extremes, but not in between? I have 147 grain .308 bullets and IMR 4198 that I would like to use, but I do not intend on experimenting myself a...

Re: Looking for opinions on 1892 Krag
I have ordered a reproduction front sight blade and look forward to trying Sgt. Peep.
I'd say you're right about the scratches.
I have used 'sooting' before, but never on sights. I will try that.
Feel free to use the photos however. If someone else can get some use from them, that's great.
Thanks!

Re: Looking for opinions on 1892 Krag
I have disassembled the rear sight and cleaned with soap and water. The black paint came right off with acetone. I'm happy with the condition of everything but am puzzled as to why the rear notch is so scratched up. Could they have been trying to dull that little bowl below the notch for some optica...

Re: Looking for opinions on 1892 Krag
Those photos definitely do help, thank you. My intent is to try to remove the goop with solvents (save a couple bucks and keep more "original" parts). I will try a bronze brush if chemical route doesn't work alone. One issue I'm having is that the windage adjustment is not giving full rang...
