Re: 1898 cut down rifle?

I am pretty sure a 24 inch crescent will do possibly a 18 inch also. My large Crescent wrenches are outside with the ranch tools. The "auto wrench" was used since it was handy and worked fine. If a cheater had been necessary the auto wrench would have had to been replaced with a Crescent a...

Re: Which brass is better Hornady or Reminton

I have cut Graf's and Winchester brass in half and the thickness along the length varies some. Probably no difference in ballistics though. The weight variation of a batch of brass would be more important as this will directly affect the volume of the case and pressure. Thinking theoretically the be...

Re: Bluing Krag Receiver

I am with Mark and Butlersrangers on the looks of a blued Krag. Another thing is the case is not very thick on a Krag sanding out the surface will only make it thinner. The metal under that case has been described as "butter soft", I have not drilled one myself, but have heard several acco...

Re: 1898 Krag - request for opinions

I have never bought a Krag but have 2 that were in the family. So I could only guess at a fair price. I see photos of them all the time on this site and you definitely have a nice one there.
As mentioned often here, Krags can be addictive. A nice sporter you can knock around chasing deer with w...

Will send tomorrow FedEx to your wife's business place.

Re: 1898 Krag - request for opinions

That is one nice looking Krag. I did not see one buggered up screw slot. From your initial post I could not tell if you had bought the rifles or were thinking of doing so.
If not yet, Butlersrangers and others could give you ideas on a fair price. You do not want to cheat a widow or pay too muc...

Re: What is this Ammo?

Hey Parashooter,
I had an old shop foreman mention that copper age hardens. If he was right, I would guess it is a slow process.
If age hardening is a real thing would almost 100 year old brass be a candidate?

Re: 1898 cut down rifle?

I did not write the number down and it is hard to measure on the split clamp. Both of my Krags are assembled and I do not want to break them down to measure.
Thought of it later, do you want to borrow this one and the barrel clamp? Pay the shipping both ways and pad the clamps with paste board ...

Re: Need help identifying rifle

The bug got you! Not surprised as the Krags are a real pleasure to shoot. Your action would still make a nice original rifle so now you can keep your eyes open for a good donor rifle while you play with it in its present form.

You might keep your eyes open for a donor sporterized Krag wi...

Re: Paint fixes everthing.

Anything is possible on these old rifles. If you could get a scope mount that had 2 holes that lined up you could drill holes in the mount to match existing holes on the receiver. You can always throw away the mount if you do not like it. I would not drill one more hole in the receiver, it has plent...
