Mark, I guess you are saying that the bolt partially rotated 'open'?
Was part of the 'flange' on the bolt-head 'missing', before your Krag Bolt Incident?

Re: Failed Krag bolt-lug
The late Michael Petrov conducted 'destructive tests' of a U.S. Krag action which were rather remarkable. His 'test action' had the bolt's 'locking-lug' entirely removed! The guide-rib/'safety lug', alone, bore the force of some grossly powerful abusive loads. IIRC - The barrel threads eventually st...

Re: Failed Krag bolt-lug
Mark reports that the early bolt came with a barreled action he purchased. He used the rig to shoot mild cast-cast bullet loads, with good results. The cracked lug developed after firing a few 220 grain 'jacketed' loads, (using data from the Speer manual), for IMR-4350. FWIW - (I suspect the cracks ...

Re: Parkhurst carbine
Historic guns often pose a dilemma. This one is an interesting GEM! Tom's Parkhurst carbine is a wonderful enigma and time capsule, but at some point of time, a very harsh and poorly executed 'refinish' was done to the stock. I regard this as a serious and distracting 'blemish' and obviously prefer ...

Re: Parkhurst carbine
Tom - The tape looks like it was a 'gun collection' inventory/ID number, for a civilian owner, private company, or small museum. I never suspected it was just a piece of tape. (Now, I have a strong urge to shoot a suppressed Krag. Curse You!) You do have quite the moral dilemma: Leave everything jus...

Failed Krag bolt-lug
Mark Daiute kindly offered a model 1892 Krag-bolt, with a cracked lug, to an interested KCA member, for the asking. I asked for it, and the 'cracked bolt' arrived, yesterday. I took some photos of it today. We don't know the exact story, about what caused the bolt to break. It likely failed from a d...

Re: Parkhurst carbine
A slight enlargement of the 'thread-protector' on Tom's Parkhurst carbine.
(I could not see the knurling on the initial pictures).

Re: I can smell ...
Was WW1/WW2 type bore-cleaner still being used to clean the M60 machine gun?
I mean the pungent thick liquid stuff that was used to remove corrosive chlorate-primer salts.

Re: I can smell ...
Why? The smell will gag a maggot!
Hot soapy water works just as well and doesn't stench-up your work space.
Windex, with ammonia, probably works, too.
Any of these 'solvents' need to be flushed out, wiped & dried out.
Follow-up is with patches wet with deep penetrating weapons oil.
