Re: Question about 1898 carbine rear sight......

Your sight is showing 2 of the 3 'C's' for a M1901 rear sight. The third 'c' is on the slide and is tiny. It's probably there, but I wouldn't loose any sleep over it. The 1901 is the most common sight used for the 1898 carbines that were 'upgraded' by the Arsenal in 1900 and 1901. Your hand guard is...

Re: ID an action cover?

I looks like it's a genuine article. It seems to have at least one of the original rawhide ties, too. The legend inside side is, I think, correct for the a U.S. action cover, but I don't know how you can confirm it is for a Krag. I don't know how many model rifles they were intended for other than t...

Re: 1905 Springfield bayonet

Both the 1906 and 1912 dates were finished in the White (Bright) when new. Springfield blued the blades in 1917, but only did so for a few years then changed to a parkerized finish. The Parkerized finish for WWII was a pretty heavy finish and blades and all handle parts looked pretty much the same w...

Re: 1896 Carbine help

Bulldog, Welcome to our little group. I have access to only the serial numbers listed in the late Frank Mallory's book, but there are others here who will have some additional sources they can check. i imagine you will soon be hearing from them, too.<br /><br />in the meantime, Mallory does not list...

Re: Krag 1899 Carbine - Serial Number 849318

Speculation how bout this was at sometime a stock for a '73 carbine that was left from earlier inventory? And, during the period of the shortages for Krag replacement carbine stocks (1901-2) was 'altered' to see how much work would be needed to adapt it to the Krag. That would account for the double...

Re: 1890 Cast "US" Buckle - ID hints?

Your buckle looks the same as all of them that I have seen or handled over a fairly long period. That only means that if its a fake it is a good one and identical to an original. Since it looks like mine, it is an original. I dont recall a lot of controversy about these cast brass buckles, but there...

Re: Front Sights - coincidence?

My first thought when I cleaned the carbine recently was "coin silver" and the pin and blade were the same color before and after the process. The tarnish wasn't what I might have expected from silver coins and there was no trace of coin features. The edges and corners of the carbine are a...

Front Sights - coincidence?

<r>Was catching up on some organization this morning and noticed that I have acquired a conundrum. I seem to have the same sight deviations on two pieces. One a rifle, one a carbine and both made in 1895. I have had the rifle for 20 plus years and have just added the carbine recently. Is this just a...
