Neat pics! My current Krag dates 1899, so it could be there.

Re: Info on this gun?
Nice looking old rifle. Everbody should have at least one Bubba Krag. I've had a few over the years, am currently down to one. Most of them shoot pretty well, they're lots of fun.

OK, I'll be honest. The stock is butt ugly. Other than that, nice rifle. You said you could take it.

Re: Easy bolt check
Are you using the same collet die for both the 308 and 30/40?

Definately +1 on a second opinion. Cut down the barrel, can't be done, both opinions sound like they're coming from someone who doesn't know what they're doing or doesn't want to do the work.

Re: Krag Abuse
I'd guess that by 1914 Krags were probably not held in high regard when compared to the "new" Springfield.

Re: Rice peep
Thanks for the pics/info. I have an original trashed cutoff that I will be able to use so won't have to go the nail route. Wondering whether or not the Redfield when installed will clear the Rice screw/nut that replaced the original extractor rivet. Or will an original rivet have to be used?
