Re: Restoring a 98 Krag

Hello Dave,
It sounds like you have a great project for you and your son, restoring a family heirloom! In my opinion your best bet would be to get a complete sight. They are on ebay, auction arms and gun broker from time to time. S&S Firearms also lists them. Also check our classifieds you mi...

Re: 1896 Krag

Hi Neil,
I just looked at the picture section and believe I have the answer. I believe you are refering to the pictures contributed by Tom Pearce. The three Krags shown there are Model '92's, The years above the pictures are the year that the gun was produced. A late production M'92 produced woul...

Re: Krag 1896/1902 Questions

Hello, Tony,
Your Krag was originaly produced in 1896. The serial number doesn't show up on my SRS list unfortunatly.
Late in there service life many older Krags, both '96 and '98's were sent back to the armory and re fitted to the most recent specs. Some were fitted with M'01 sights and reis...

Re: 1898 carbine? please help

Hello William,
The dovetail does not belong there. It is probably just oldtime gunsmithing creativity! The M'01 rifle sight takes an '01 hand guard. If you don't have a hand guard and/or sight already it might be easier to buy a hand guard first then match the rear sight to it as sights seem to b...

Re: 1898 carbine? please help

Hello William,
As you suspected your Krag is a cut down rifle. The serial number puts it in the 1903 production range but it doesn't show up on the SRS list that I have. Someone spent a little extra time on it though by moving the original front sight base back insted of slipping a band sight on ...

Re: Krag 1896 springfield

To All,
One point that has been missed in all of this is the content, or lack of, in the original post. We all need more to go on if we are to assist Joe or any one else who comes to this site. We need the full serial number, a clear desciption of the condition of the gun, barrel length front sig...

Re: 96 Carbine Serial Number

Hello Guy,
I was at a Gun Show to day where I ran into a fellow Krag collector who has done a fair amount of research and who I would consider a very reliable source. I told him about your carbine and passed on some intresting information. It seem that in 1901 Springfield Armory sort of cleaned h...

Re: 96 Carbine Serial Number

Just got a better look at the cartouche picture (my computer screen is old and small!) it does look like 1901! The plot thickens!

Re: 96 Carbine Serial Number

Guy,
I just looked at your pictures, that is a nice looking carbine! The 1901 cartouche is more of a mystery to me now. Your gun has the original style short forend stock and if the stock was field replacement it would definately not have a cartouche. But after adoption of the 'M 99 carbine those...

Re: 96 Carbine Serial Number

Hello Guy,
To the best of my knowledge cartouches were only put on newly compleated firearms after final inspection and not on refitted guns. The 1901 cartouche makes me believe that someone, most likely outside of the armory, refitted youre gun with a M'99 carbine stock from another gun. What do...
