There are three rifles belonging to members of this forum that were issued to the 3rd Kentucky volunteers during the Spanish American war. Mine among them.
This was revealed in a thread a while back. Still crazy to me. It would be neat to get them all together again one day.

I did purchase this and it came in yesterday.
Other than the mentioned writing on the inside cover (doesn't bother me) and the missing dust jacket (hate them anyway), it's in perfect condition.

Neat book so far!

Conclusion:
That is not a shim of wood. It appears to be an area where the previous owner was starting to do some inletting to correct the issue weve been talking about.
The mystery lives on.
