Re: Stevens - Pope Barrels

No. Stevens-Pope barrels were never installed on GPR rifles. The S-P barrels were made starting about 1900-1902 (going by memory, there are many discussions on this forum). They were sold commercially and were purchased by National Guard units in Ohio, PA, NJ & Washington DC. Those units convert...

Re: Binge Watching

I've read a couple of reports on modern tests of Baker rifles. Not all that much of an improvement over a smoothbore with properly fitted round balls.

Re: Hornaday Interlock 220 grain bullet Sale

If you look for FMJ 220-grain bullets, Woodleigh and others, called "solids" by the Brits and some of the guys headed for Africa, check them with a magnet. Steel jackets were in vogue for shooting big critters in Africa. Probably not good for our Krag barrels. I was in the bullet business ...

Re: Factory loaded ammunition

I certainly led a sheltered life in an Illinois farm town in the 1950s. I don't remember ever seeing anything like that.

Re: Factory loaded ammunition

During the "Insurrection" in the Philippines, it was found that some Filipino combatants 'reloaded' the spent primers, in .43 Spanish brass. They removed the primer cup and filled it with shaved match-head material. I don't know if they bothered removing the 'dent' before filling and repl...

Re: Factory loaded ammunition

Culpepper, how much did you pay for a box back in 2005? That would be a good example of a "utilitarian commodity" holding a steady value while our "money" aka "exchange certificates" is continuously devalued.

Re: Krag Ammo by the crate

Given today's prices, if that was new ammunition, all in small cardboard or plastic boxes inside a big cardboard box, it would go for something like $2,000 or $2,500. If those are 50 of the really old lift-top pasteboard boxes full of FMJ Krag loads, presumably all unopened. Plus a neat Winchester p...

Re: The Krag in South Africa.

The Boer purchasing agents in Europe had a lot of hard currency (gold coins) at a time when other currencies were less desirable. Steyr (and Mauser) sold the agents (who apparently didn't know much about rifles) almost anything in the odd corner of their warehouses. The purchase of 5,000 Guedes sing...

Re: The Two Greatest Presidents In My Life Time

Mr. Cleveland was a bit before my time. IIRC, the 2nd time around, he got to preside over a pretty bad depression. Mr. Hosmer and I live in the Democratic Peoples' Republic of California, wherein the winner gets all the electoral votes and they are already assigned to Ole Joe. It's a done deal. A vo...
