Re: The Big Bang, before it was a theory

<r>That paper-cap powder residue was so corrosive, I did not like subjecting my early arsenal to it. I preferred whacking those rolls of caps with my Dad's Claw-Hammer, between houses in our driveway (better acoustics)!

Our Moms were swell. They always got us the most authentic toy guns, ...

The Big Bang, before it was a theory

<r>When I was a kid, (long before fireworks became legal in my 'Home State'), a sure sign of boredom and 'Summer Ending' was the residue of black soot and charred red paper on the sidewalks.

I can still hear the loud bang and smell the aroma of pure percussion.

Mind you don't...

Re: 1st Krag and Hello

<r>'Scott_B' - Your U.S. Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen is unusual in that the Action still has very pronounced 'Case-Hardened Colors'. The original 'Springfield Armory Finish' on the Krag has very neat and subtle colors on the various components, reflecting the different techniques used in finishing and...

Re: 1st Krag and Hello

<r>'Scott_B' - Welcome to the KCA Forum. That is an exceptional model 1898 Krag you added to your collection. It appears quite correct in your photos.

At that price, you should be 'Housed' in one of Michigan's fine institutions for "those who steal".

BTW - You will n...

Re: What's going on with this brass?

Keith - I'm not knocking the persuit of perfection. As you state, there are different valid approaches to Reloading and not every minor variable effects accuracy at the target. Keeping it fun is important.

One old extra-step I use: 1. Start the bullet slightly into the case-mouth with the...

Re: Just another handed down Krag?

It could be an individual case defect. It could be from brass being brittle from age. Anneal your other 'fired' cases and see how they fare.

Re: What's going on with this brass?

'RichWIS' - gave a good suggestion about using a .308 Winchester F.L. Sizing Die to Neck-Size .30-40 Brass.

Keith - confirmed your fired Brass is dimensionally typical for 'once fired Krag brass'.

The .30-40 Case Neck is quite long. It is not necessary to Re-size the entire ca...

Re: What's going on with this brass?

'Texas10': I think you meant to say reduced powder weight by three Grains (not Grams).

In regard to safety, I don't rightly know. I do not know what propellant was used in the old Factory Loads, that you reduced.

From what I have read over the years, DETONATIONS occur with redu...

Re: What's going on with this brass?

'Parashooter': As always - Great explanations and graphics! Thanks.

P.S. - IIRC - A primer projecting to the rear that has maintained its rounded corners ('cup-shape' and not flattened), can be a sign of low pressure in rounds. On Firing, the primer was pushed back to take up 'free play',...

Re: What's going on with this brass?

<r>The .30-40 Krag cartridge 'head-spaces' on its rim. It is normal in necked-rimmed cartridges, like the .30-40 Krag (and even more so with the .303 British), for the factory cartridge case shoulder to 'move forward' and form to the chamber. Your fired cases don't look that unusual to me.
<br ...
