Re: 2 modified Krags

Thanks,
BR
Did not realize there was much difference between the #1 and #3.
If these common sporters were expensive, we would not feel as free to use them or be able to cannibalize one to put a collectors item back in shape.
I saw a couple of ads for original Gatlin guns, if Kr...

Re: 2 modified Krags

We all wish our sporters were worth more. But when you hear news reports about military grade weapons you can think to yourself "I have a couple of those!"
Gun shows were mentioned earlier in this thread, has anyone seen Ruger #3s in 30/40 recently, if so what do they go for? I saw on...

Re: 1892 Bolt Question

I just looked at to extractors lying around the shop and could not see any evidence of a crimp. I think that spring may have been originally press fit?
Both the extractor and spring are spring tempered which my way of thinking would make them difficult to crimp without breaking them.
If th...

Re: 1892 Bolt Question

After hanging out there for a while I have never heard of bad bolts, so I do not think that will be a concern unless the bolt has been modified. Others here will have more info.

Before you go through a bunch of ammunition you will probably want to replace the missing cut off lever. I le...

Re: Reloading for 35/40 Krag

<r>Tied the 35/40 to a chair and started with 40.0g Varget, pulled the trigger with a string and went as expected.
Next shot with 43.0 grains, no problems.
Next shot with 46.0 grains, was also uneventful.
I had refigured for a compressed load and got 47.2 grains, so I loaded this as ...

Re: Reloading for 35/40 Krag

Hello Parashooter. I have been running this QuickLoad today and to see if it was acting right, I ran the earlier mentioned 4350 loads with 220 grain bullets in 30/40. With the 41.5 grains mentioned that cracked a bolt Q/L shows that is under the 47,137PSI safe value but unknown tolerances may cause ...

Re: Sporterizing how to - Mill set up #2

<r>This is the last planned installment of this thread. The first photo shows the fixture still level after milling the front guard screw area. This got the cut out centered to the action and wide enough for the new guard as well as finishing the new pillar to the correct height.
After that bu...

Re: Sporterizing how to - Mill Fixture for stock work

<r>The angle iron in the front is made from commercial 3/4 x 4 angle iron that I bought from a oil field machine shop where I worked. After squaring it up in the mill 2 oversize 5/16 holes were drilled on 4 inch centers for holding the V blocks to the angle. The distance to the front edge was 1/2 th...
