Nice! I also used the M2 spec 150gr FMJBT projectile. What overall length did you use? I think I used a longer one as the cannelure is visible in my loads.

Re: Vithavuori for the 30-40
I would start with the rear sight at 100 M. When shooting a rifle for the first time, I use a large piece of cardboard (1M x 1M) for my target backstop at 50 yards (or meters). Even if the rifle shoots way off, you will probably still hit the cardboard.

Re: Needed one good man with a Krag
When I was stationed at Hurlburt Field we would have to arm and de-arm the airplanes on a pad at the north end of the runway. The pad abutted a swamp, and the gators would come out and sun themselves on the tarmac. Sometimes we would have to shoo them off the pad. CO2 fire extinguishers were the mot...

Re: Range report 1898 carbine
I spent about an hour playing with a smoky candle and some wood scrapers fitting the barrel and receiver to the stock. High points were under the loading door, on the other side under the side plate, and at the front of the receiver, base of the barrel area. Got some range time yesterday, I shot a c...

Re: Problem with chambering new brass
I recently purchased 100 rounds of new Winchester 30-40 Krag brass. The ends of many cases were not circular so I neck sized them. I then measured case length and found that maybe 20% or so were too long and needed trimming. I won't ever forget a lesson that a friend learned. He had loaded 100 round...

Re: Range report 1898 carbine
I once bought a used Mossberg 800BM. .243 Win., Mannlicher style stock, with a Mannlicher style butter knife bolt handle. A real pretty piece in new condition. It shot patterns at 100 yards. When I removed the front barrel piece, the front of the stock moved away from the barrel a full 3/8's of an i...

Re: Range report 1898 carbine
Fred: You 'ratted me out'. I now have an appointment to see Sister Mary of the Decimal, on Monday, to receive my consequences for past transgressions and miscalculations. I am sure the penance for my misfractions will be sizeable. In regard to Larry's nice carbine stock, I would not use epoxy beddi...

Re: Range report 1898 carbine
Butlersrangers, when the barrel band is removed, the barrel lifts up 50 thousandths of an inch, not 500 thousandths of an inch. Not as bad as you thought, but I think it can cause an issue with accuracy. Whig, I am using the peep sight. It does take some seconds to acquire a sight picture. Sure wasn...

Re: Range report 1898 carbine with questions
Not being real happy with the rifle shot I checked out a few things. As I have read here the bore size may be suspect. I poured a lead slug and mic'd it, and the bore measured .307-.308" so I think I'm okay there. I then checked how the receiver and barrel are bedded in the stock. I tightened t...

Range report 1898 carbine
Recently acquired from a long life in a dusty gun cabinet. See my thread in U.S. Krags. I acquired 100 rounds of new Winchester brass and a set of RCBS dies online, and spun up 20 rounds to function test. The load I used is 36.1 grains of IMR 4895 with a 150gr FMJBT head. My Sierra and Hornady books...
