Re: Would You Accept the Krag In 1892?

Because I can't help myself from going down a rabbit hole, and I believe most have likely no more interest in this, I felt this needed to be added for further understanding as the sentiment of the Krag while it was the service rifle. The link below is an article by a 1st Lt. in an April 1902 "R...

Re: Would You Accept the Krag In 1892?

The Trapdoor was a great single shot rifle. It served right after the Civil Was in various calibers up until the Krag started being manufactured. The old regime in the Army wanted to hang unto the Trapdoor longer and had the 45-70 made with smokeless powder to extend the Trapdoor's life. But the Kra...

Re: Late season deer

Good on ya. What state did you get it?

I'll be going next weekend with my flintlock rifle in the teens and single digits in northern Illinois for the late-late season. Snows coming this week. Hoping the deer will be herding up in my hunting spot. Worked many times in the past.

Re: Would You Accept the Krag In 1892?

Ahh, yes. We had a slight diversion there. But let me sum this up for me. If I was a civilian in 1892 and only had the newspaper to read, it would have torqued my jaw to see that foreign inventors had won the design of America's first magazine rifle. That is without knowing any of the criteria and t...

Re: Would You Accept the Krag In 1892?

This is a picture of the actual rifle my great grandfather purchased after being discharged from the Army in 1902. It was not of military configuration, made in 1899. A great-uncle had shortened the barrel, changed the sights, put a butt pad on it and executed an amateurish checkering with a pocket ...

Re: Would You Accept the Krag In 1892?

Here is an article on Rapidity of Fire - Magazine Rifles from 1892 by a forward thinking first lieutenant. This gives a flavor for what the Army was going to, although some in the military didn't agree to the rapid fire. But this article addresses that with common sense and why the Krag-Jorgensen wa...

Re: Would You Accept the Krag In 1892?

The Model 1895 Winchester was considered, but fell out of favor due to shooting from a trench and manipulating the lever. 20,000 were ordered for the Army in 30-40, some being used in the Filipino insurrection. I believe that Colonel/Gen'l(?) Miles was a proponent of the Winchester and totally again...

Re: Would You Accept the Krag In 1892?

See Appendix 9, page 110, from the above link. This is the report recommending the Krag-Jorgensen No. 5". Note that one of the reasons it was selected was because it could handle both flanged and rimless cartridges, but they recommended the flanged design "on account of the difficulties th...

Re: Would You Accept the Krag In 1892?

I don't believe that the designs submitted were required to be bolt-action, though many of the new designs in other countries were. The Army was looking for a "magazine" rifle, or in otherwords, a repeating rifle. In the link I provided above go to page 27 for more information on the selec...

Re: Would You Accept the Krag In 1892?

The .30 Army round was designed and pre-selected by the Army. It would later be dubbed the 30-40 Krag, unofficially. The Army was considering a rimless design, but decided against it for a few reasons. One reason is they weren't confident in a rimless cartridge feeding through the Gatling Gun. The f...
