1898's with 1901 and 1902 rear sights abound and for less than 1K. Check out Gunbroker and be happy.

this is a truly beautiful rifle I would love to own. How is the bore and does it have a circled P behind the trigger guard and a cartouche on the left side of the stock?

strange the things we do. I picked up the last 5 inches of a Krag barrel with the front sight base on it, at a gunshow for 5 bucks. It's in a bag with all my Krag parts.

no, no hold open notch on receiver and no pin on the extactor, the rifel was not upgraded.
Maybe there is some confusion as I mentioned another rifle I have with four digit serial number that was, indeed, upgraded to 1896.
