Boiling, Bubba or not?

Now a lot has come up in regard to boiling rusted parts as to preserve the finish and remove rust and "patina" which I consider rust, now I always boil rusted gun parts in distilled water as soon as I get them, I don't boil every gun, only if it's rusted, this doesn't change the finish it ...

Re: Matte vs Polished

Your barreled action does look quite nice, the receiver for example would have been lighter colored than your barrel from the beginning as it was case hardened, along with your magazine door and side plate, so your Krag still has enough of the original case hardening in my opinion to not reblue as K...

Re: Show me a nice stock Cartouche

Alright I have held out long enough, here is my 1901 cartouche, it is on a stock I purchased 2nd hand and didn't have a book to double check authenticity, after returning home I checked it by the book and believe it is authentic.

Re: Matte vs Polished

In my opinion, rust can be solved quite easily by boiling or steaming parts and then lightly scrubbing them with 0000 steel wool, this won't remove finish but will convert the rust into rust blue, like BR said finishes are complicated on the Krag but "patina" is often just oiled rust, and ...

Re: CMP krag barrels

I'm interested in seeing some pictures once it's done, specifically of the front sight base. I also would like to know if the standard screws work for the sight as iv heard they are a different thread. I'm planning on getting one of these eventually and would like to know what kind of work it will t...

Re: M1898 Identification

What you have there is what I believe to be a cutdown rifle, I looked at the front sight block and it doesn't look as professionally fitted as what came out of the armory. The stock is what appears to be a Springfield 1903 stock as noted by the filled in floor plate, odd left side, and the crossbolt...

Re: Why did the US go with the Krag design?

One thing to remember when pondering why the Krag was chosen in the US was logistics. Many people balk at the idea of conserving ammo, in the modern time this is hard to comprehend, with motorized transports, cargo planes, practically unlimited resupply. Back then anything and everything for the US ...

Re: Careful on this one

Maybe it's my eyes playing tricks on me but it appears as if that notch is offset as well, I looked at the 1901 rifle sight on my current rifle and it is also offset, I used the tail on a set of calipers to verify the difference, but ill have to give you a read out later this weekend as my analog ca...

Re: Why did the US go with the Krag design?

The Krag was adopted at a time where the US was looking for a rifle that could be used as a single shot and have a magazine held in reserve for cavalry charges and other emergencies. The krag was chosen over other designs because the US was in love with the magazine design, it could be topped off wi...

Re: Careful on this one

20210520_233623.jpg I maybe have a possible variation then as this came on a 1902 year production rifle and you can notice the notch is offset to the right, I'll have to compare the picture to a current 1901 sight I have as I sold that rifle in the picture, I thought the sight notch was offset on a...
