Re: 32 Steps - in manufacture of U.S. Krag barrel

<blockquote><blockquote>. . . Just found a reference to drilling and reaming the front sight hole. Must be another 30 caliber barrel being described, not Krag. . .</blockquote><br />I suspect the hole in question is for the blade retaining pin - drilled straight then reamed to the taper that has fru...

Re: 32 Steps - in manufacture of U.S. Krag barrel

I thought the threads on my Krag barrel were lathe cut. Dragged the old barrel out and looked at it with a 7 power loop and I am not sure. Some of the marks look like conventional single point lathe turning and some look like they could be milled as described along with the figure 12 of a thread mil...

Re: 32 Steps - in manufacture of U.S. Krag barrel

I have a tough time reading in depth articles on a screen. I do a lot better with print. Just found a reference to drilling and reaming the front sight hole. Must be another 30 caliber barrel being described, not Krag. I had thought the threading was indexed to the barrel from previous discussions b...

Re: More Bolt Trivia

I know where I had seen the star now it was on your hand written list. Probably means the same thing as on a barrel, all dimensions checked and near the mean. Maybe like a first article inspection after tools are changed or the whole set up is refreshed. <br /><br />On these drop indicators the gaug...

Old powder

Thought about putting this in the ammo and reloading section but it probably is more chit chat.<br />We had a strong north wind Saturday and dust from the neighbors plowed field kept me from working outside on the ranch. Needed to do something useful, so I went inside and reloaded 45 shot shells for...

Re: More Bolt Trivia

<r>Butlersrangers you are on to something there. I have thought of a way to measure actual headspace variation produced by the bolt. The attached photo shows a simulation of how I would do it. Bolt lug to the cartridge recess is the actual dimension to measure.<br />My V-block in the photo is close ...

Re: Another put together rifle

We were pretty sure that the Krags were done this way from past discussions. I wonder how long it took them to get that perfected? It would be interesting to what year marked their success, and what percentage had to be fudged by over tightening or dimpling. Also was Doco's example done at the arsen...

Re: Another put together rifle

Doco, what is the story on the chamber side of the barrel? Was it that way when you acquired the barrel? We have had discussions about Krag barrels being at least somewhat interchangeable and the sights and extractor cuts lining up when changed. The punch marks appear to be an attempt to tighten up ...

Re: Sounds dangerous

Proofing with an overpressure charge is a routine thing. Getting good proof loads is somewhat hard today. I imagine that it was back then also. Proofing usually is done at a safe distance or containing device and the trigger is remotely pulled.<br />Screwing a 30-06 barrel on for one firing would be...

Re: Parts build for Krag rifle

<r>I am attaching a drawing that I sent to the folks that made my 35 caliber barrel. It is in PDF format. you can open print it give a copy to your gunsmith. On this drawing I wanted the barrel to match the original contours to lessen stock work so it should be pretty close out to 17.5 inches, the l...
