Re: chronograph my krag

The weakest link when firing a chambered cartridge is the cartridge case itself. The U.S. Krag has a rimmed cartridge and headspaces on the cartidge rim. The case walls are very well supported in the Krag chamber. The action receiver has a single heat-treat which leaves the metal relatively hard and...

Re: chronograph my krag

Dick Hosmer is a true gentleman and he generously shares a wealth of useful knowledge. His observations and 2 cents worth are priceless!<br /> (It is my understanding that the U.S. Krag has the same metallurgy as a low # 1903 Springfield. I won't shoot a low # 1903 because a case failure allows hot ...

Re: new member needs info on 1896 Krag

The measurements Cody gave don't jive with the picture. It definitely appears the Krag in the picture has a cut-down rifle stock. However, the barrel appears to be carbine length. With a Krag rifle stock, the dimension from the rear of the receiver ring to the front of the barrel band is about 10 in...

Re: magazine cut off

Louis: Later types of Krag cutoffs usually function with earlier U.S. Krag actions. The length of the cutoff shaft is not relevant. On later cutoffs, when the lever is rotated to the 'up' position, it turns the flat surface of the shaft even with the inside wall of the receiver. This allows cartridg...

Re: new member needs info on 1896 Krag

Cody: Did you measure your barrel by inserting a cleaning rod until it stops against the closed bolt face and marking the rod at the muzzle? Your rifle picture looks to me to have a longer than 20.5 inch barrel. A carbine barrel is 22 inches when measured as I have described.

Re: New firing pin

Ned is right. I just found the listing and was going to share but he helped you first. I have bought things from drbecker and he is a straight shooter. $15.00 plus postage is a good price.

Re: New firing pin

Check GunBroker for "Krag". Original parts routinely show up. I have seen a reproduction Firing Pin listed but it costs about the same as an original. A good Machinist can easily chuck your broken Firing Pin in a lathe, machine off the broken tip, bore into the Firing Pin body, and then 'p...

Re: Comparing Original Finishes

The U.S. Krag requires the "magazine cut-off" to be in place or a similarly shaped shaft to be inserted in the machined cavity (for the cut-off) for the action to smoothly feed rimmed cartridges. The Pacific Sights cleverly incorporated such a shaft as part of the sight base. This allows f...

Re: New guy in town

I'm guessing your Lyman sight required drilling and mounting on the left side of the receiver, since you mentioned it covers up the serial number. Holes drilled and tapped into the receiver damage the collector desirability of a Krag. On the other hand, your Krag is a family heirloom, since your gra...

Re: New guy in town

Your 1899 Krag started life as a cavalry carbine. All 1899 Receivers were carbines with 22" barrels. It would be nice if you can post pictures. You will get a lot of useful information and identification help that way. Once you master removing the bolt, give the bore a good cleaning (always fro...
